It is Russian, too…

Will you solve this in five minutes, teusje, or do you need some more time. I am going to the market to buy some asparagus for the evening, and be back in less than two hours, but can wait a bit….

Right: I'll be off now, but will be back as soon as possible.

Reg

Think out of box
Bigger than it seems?
More cargo than it seems?
More passenger plane than it seems?
More STOL than it seems?

Because to me it hopelessly seems one of those military rocket-tubes with swept wings attached (and perhaps, but just incidentally, a canopy) the Soviets mass-produced during the cold war era...

Good afternoon gentlemen,

Reg,

Could it be the Kometa 1 cruise missile?

I've just finished work (what a pleasure to search at a reasonable speed!!) and off home soon, but won't be back online for a few hours, so Open House please if correct.

NOOOOOO!!!!

Not only has TC gotten it right but this unreasonable person has posted a picture of the same pimple-nosed exhibition item as I photographed a few weeks ago especially for a challenge in the Peenemünde airport:

They call it Mikoyan KS-1 Komet (Nato name AS-1 "Kennel"). In the case of DDR Volksmarine, it was used for coastal defense and launched using an auxiliary rocket. Other use would have been launching from Tupolev Tu 16 Badger.

TC has requested Open House.

Bummer, I have to leave home for a couple of hours and leave my challenge unattended. Apologies.

A clue to sweeten the pill:

What goes up must always come down (and then up, and then down, and then up again...)

Evening HP,

A clue to sweeten the pill:

Could it be the DFS-332 research glider/rocket

I've only found a thumbnail and a drawing and neither give me much hope, but the description of its planned use kinda fits the clue

After being towed to altitude, the crew would make a series of dives at different speeds. However, to be able to perform tests at higher speeds, the aircraft was also fitted with two Walter HWK-R II/203 rocket engines, delivering 750 kg of thrust each. They were installed in the fuselages with rocket nozzles under the lower fuselage, aligned 10 degrees down.
Abend Reg,

Sorry about the photo mate ; but it was the only one I could find that looked like your challenge, and of course, I was never going to find the original 'coz it wasn't on the web!! But it is now , Good challenge!!

I thought DFS-332 would have had shorter wings……

That's why I don't hold out much hope Reg, the drawing and thumbnail show more widely spaced fuselages and stubbier outer wing panels, but I have known these things to be wrongly depicted in models or artists impressions before!

Savoia-Marchetti SM-92?

We are looking at the same thumbnails….

or, General Aircraft GAL-48B Twin-Hotspur,

but you are right, the only one that fits the clue should the one you proposed….

Edit: I am wondering what is the blob near the tail on the LHS…. Of course, you would not see if there is something similar on the RHS, but still….

I'm sure we are!! However, beginning to wonder if it's too late to be in there??

The SM does look more in proportion to the silhouette and I suppose that the mention in it's Wiki entry could fit the clue, where it says of the prototype after a friendly fire attack "The aircraft survived by performing evasive manoeuvres, but it was so badly damaged that it was grounded for months.!"

The big trouble with all these including the GAL, is that they all have constant chord section joining the fuselage, but not so HP's silhouette! As for that blob ????

Wil retire now and be back in the morning to see whether or not the verdict has been handed down.

Good night!
