Excellent news

Remember seeing the Vulcan display at the Bassingbourn Airshow many years ago. Was one of the reasons I decided to learn to fly.

For fear of sounding like an "anorak"...I bought the Flight Simulator 2002/4 Vulcan "addon" from Phoenix Simulation Software. Superb accurate rendition of this fantastic aeroplane. The authentic engine sounds also gave my hi-fi speakers a run for their money

Can't wait to (hopefully) see the Vulcan airborne again and wooing a new generation of potential aviators.

The security implications of this belie belief. A bomber in British skies flown by a crew from a GA airfield who have not been security checked. I hope that the gentlemen of the press don't hear about this.

Let's hope the old girl comes over to the Canadian National Exhibition Air Show like she did in the past. She was always a hit. I remember seeing her many times at the show - a low speed pass right over the crowd with her doors open

Looking forward to seeing that magnificent beast airborne again. I remember watching the display at Greenham Common in 1983, a real lump in ya throat moment.

I lived in Cyprus 1970-1973 and recall seeing them screaming across the central plain at very low level. I believe they were used for radar reconnaissence over the Black Sea from there. They were in the all white scheme and looked just fantastic.

Another daily had this to say:
Vulcan bomber saved.....and it's thanks to the Daily Express
It then went on to say that Sir Jack Hayward made a £500,000 donation.

Its fantastic news and for me its one of the most beautiful aircraft ever to fly. I can't wait to her fly again. I am one of the sick saddo's who watch Thunderball for the shots of the cockpit of a Vulcan!

QUOTE LysanderV8:

I have been fortunate enough to hear many stories from my cousin who was the boss of 617 Squadron in the cold war era, flying the Vulcan. In those days, at least one was airborne at all times with an atomic bomb "strapped 10 feet behind my a**e" as he puts it. His designtated target was Leningrad and the crew were well aware that if the call came to go, they would have insufficient fuel to return to base, but understood that under such circumstances there would be precious little to come back to. Makes you think how lucky we all are that the deterrent worked.

It was a rare event for V Bombers to get airborne with nuclear weapons. It was normal for each squadron to have one on QRA but it stayed on the ground. I'm talking about the mid sixties but I doubt this changed later. Maybe you should question your cousin more closely about his RAF service.

Also, to this day no V-force crews will tell you what their targets were.... Neither did the V-force fly continuous airborne alert sorties; methinks your cousin doth speak with forked tongue.

Rest assured that the selected Vulcan aircrew will have no difficulty in taking '558 back to the skies. All are in current flying practice on other types and the VOC's AOC requires a structured training programme before any of them fly '558 again.

I, and a few thousand others, have backed the Vulcan. Tell us your project, be it a Shackleton, Valiant, Victor,Comet, Hastings, Varsity, Britannia,Canberra and see where you get!

I think there is a little of the before and after here so I think we can safely close this original thread in favour of the new one with the pics of 588 now almost assured of the future we all hoped for.

Now everyone can be a lot more positive and leave the negatives behind.

You can of course, visit this thread anytime you wish.

It is certainly is great news.
