Gipsy Major 8 or 10-2.......confused!
Surfing through loads of stuff on DHC-1 Chipmunks recently and there seem to be various references to the Gipsy Major as either '8' or '10' or '10-2'.
Early historical refs seem to be to the '8', later ones to the '10'.
Is this something related to ex-MoD units accepted into civilian life?
I'm obviously a bit of a numpty, but I'm sure someone out there can complete my education.

The Mk 8 was the RAF version of the 10 Mk 2 which is a development of the 10 Mk 1-3. It is acceptable for civilian use.
The 10 MK2-1 is similar to the 10 Mk 2 but has some modifications to allow it to fit in an Auster and an electric start instead of the cartridge starter.
Then there was the 10 1-7, 10 1-1, and respective 'A' variants and not forgetting the Mk1!

If the Mk8 has mod 1685 embodied, which is a change in main bearing material, it is identical to the 10 MK 2.
Chances are that all MK 8's would have this embodied, not unless it has been in storage for a very long time.
If you have a MK8 and want to use it you will need the mil log card so a civil log book can be raised. I have got the MK 10 maintenance and overhaul manual up at the hangar if you want any more gen.
