Shuttleworth VJ Display 07 Aug 05
Heres my take on the excellent VJ Day display at Old Warden.
Starting off with the Chipmunk display, superbly flown by Pete Kosogorin, the minutes silence was immaculately observed in the section of the crowd I was in.
Now the rest, star of the day for me was Paul Stone in the FAA HF Sea Fury. We were promised one pass, he delivered a full display. The Lysander display was one of the more sprightly I have seen performed.
At the end of an emotional week, Steve had a good send off I think.

Nick, they are just brill. How do we keep on saying it? You have got some shots there. The best is for me, the Lysander - I have never seen it look so good. Thanks mate. Superlative stuff indeed.

I regret that I had dozed off at home yesterday lunchtime - I had intended to try to observe the silence, perhaps I did. Still thinking of you Steve.
The shot of the Brisfit is magnificent and stands proud amongst another great crop - energy, history, nostalgia and English rural perfection all encapsulated in one photograph... The SE5 tingles the spine as well... Wish I'd been there...

Well done nick, fantastic picture, again, again and again.
The minutes silence for Steve gave me a lump in my throat and must i say that i have never heard such quitness at Old Warden.

It was indeed a most excellent day!
Personally, I think that the 'pilot-of-the-day' award should go to whoever it was who lead the Avro formation in the ancient triplane. Not any easy task - I was astonished to see it taking off in quite gusty conditions, but amazed to se it leading a vic!

Did anyone else think that the Bristol Fighter display was a bit tamer than usual? Normally it makes a wonderful high-pitched whine when fuly wound-up; on Sunday it was definitely more restrained.

The Brisfit was being flown by George Ellis, a master in the art of panache over power. His Hurricane display is on the same lines and makes a very nice alternative.
Oh and he had what appeared to be engine troubles at the end of the display, perhaps trouble in 't pipework?
I will have to check the originals but it looks like the Avro Triplane was flown by Dodge Bailey.........nuff said really!

MOTF - as always superb pictures - there's no way I'm going to post the ones I took here. Were you one of the crew who were washing down the Magister at the end of the display?
I have to say I thought whoever was flying the Avro Tutor in formation with the Triplane was doing a magnificent job. I doubt that the Triplane goes that fast when S&L, so I assume that the poor old Tutor can't have been that far above its stall speed.
I didn't see the F2B display as I was having a look round the hangers, but I do remember seeing some pretty spirited ones in the past (flown by John Lewis I think). I think the collection tend to be a bit gentler with some of the aircraft now compared to when I first started going (back in the 1980s). I'm sure that in the past I've seen even the Avro 504 looped

Brooklands, the Maggie scrubbers (we also did the Chippy and Ryan after the show) were Darren Harbar, Andy & Vanessa Jones and myself. The Chippie and Spitfire received some intensive scrubbing the day before the show so that they'd look their best.
