Sure. But whether they're willing to be is another story.

We can only suggest they think about being a volunteer. It worked in Scandinavia.

Not a pilot myself but know several pilots who are currently at risk of losing their jobs.

Apart from specific flying skills, how would you (pilots) offer your services to an employer? If you've had other specific skills (heavy truck licence etc) that makes it different, but if you've 'only' ever been a pilot, what skills make you a desirable employee?

Pilots I know have (usually) been:

• quick to pick up new skills / ideas / procedures etc
• able to work cooperatively / professionally in teams
• able to make decisions fairly quickly and decisively
• have good spatial awareness
• good hand / eye coordination
• adaptable to changing working conditions

I'm thinking here of several pilots I know have these skills / capabilities (and more) but am not sure, if I was in their place, how I could present these skills to a potential non-aviation employer.

There are many web sites (or varying quality) offering suggestions on job applications but I've not found anything useful relating to aviation.

Apart from keeping an eye on here, any suggestions?

I believe truck jobs are in big demand, bottle shops (Dan Murphy’s) Coles, Woolworths.

Im doing a short course on pool upkeep and installation which takes a month or so. Then I’m full time with a mate who has a business. It’s a massive pay drop, but it keeps us just afloat with wife working.

Stay strong, keep active, try not to fall into a state of ‘I’m doomed and can’t do anything’ attitude- as hard as that may be.

An idea I have been thinking about in my neighbourhood is Uber eat delivery driver. People will be ordering a lot more from home now.

I’ve heard whispers the Royal Flying Doctors are in talks with QF about possibly taking a few (same deal as woolies & Telstra) as they are looking at a busy winter.

Seek.com had cabin crew jobs listed for Hevilift based out of Brisbane. I assume their mining flights and other charter work are not as drastically impacted as other airlines RPT services that cross state borders...

That's a great idea. Maybe in the future in return QF can offer some sort of pathway to RFDS pilots interested in pursing airlines.

I highly doubt it. Given the time and cost to train up a new pilot, and the fact that there’s probably plenty of pilots without jobs now who would like permanent jobs, I would be very surprised if they would be thinking about taking on such temporary pilots.

An aircraft can still only fly so many hours in a day, and if they already have correct numbers then they would be able to fly those maximum hours in a day without the need to bother with temporary pilots.

My son went down to our local Dan Murphys today to hand in his resume hoping for some casual work and had the supervisor apologise and tell him they are under strict instructions to hire QF staff. Cheers

Hardly sounds like an equal opportunity employer. If it's true I'll be shopping elsewhere. I have nothing against QF staff and wish them well but this is appalling.

This predatory corporate behavior has pervaded over many years. A deep sense of entitlement is displayed. There have been a number of deals done by corporate over the years that appear to bypass “normal” process and expectation, this is only to alleviate the corporate burden and preserve the executives position and entitlements. Workers only pick up what they can by whatever means they are presented. (Human nature).

I think its a lousy idea. There are hundreds of well qualified pilots with no jobs to go back to like the QF people will do eventually. And as far as the RFDS being "a pathway" to a job in QF, just imagine how much more the RFDS will be able to exploit people by dangling that carrot.

Pretty amazing (if true) where many of my ex airline mates (myself included) applied several times to the RFDS only to be told we don't hire ex airline guys. Magenta line phobia I guess.

I think the RFDS was only looking at people who were already endorsed and had previously worked for them (very little training needed to get back up to speed) as a short term measure to cover for an expected increase in crew sickness. I don’t think it was only specific to Qantas pilots.

Not necessarily the case - current Mt Isa Senior Base Pilot spent 20 yrs in QF & Air Vanuatu, then a 12 mth break from flying before commencing with RFDS in YBMA.

A good mate went from CX A330 Capt. to PC12 with RFDS in Derby. After a short stint in the bush, became head of C&T for West Ops at Jandakot.

That might be the key there.

The latest "Job Keeper" scheme announced this afternoon should hopefully take the edge off some of the financial pressure people are under. I'm pleasantly surprised this sheme has appeared so quickly, yet also a little concerned where the government is accesing all this extra money from.

I'm sure it will have a positive impact so get onto your employer and start the process. First payments should be available beginning of May.
