I heard a rumour... SYD- Joburg to be gifted to Emirates via Dubai. As good place as any for the ops spare. Coz there ain't much much money comin out of Asia.

Out here in the deep Oulduvai we were wondereing about the JNB route. If they can kill FRA against all contrary logic surely JNB cannot be far behind? As much as it pains my primitive brain to contemplate, that would dovetail with the plan to destroy the airline in order to save it.

If they want to run it as a going concern I could scarcely think of a better outcome. But why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? Unless the Asian potential and Pacific actual markets are enough to entice them?

QF does have some unused strategic advantages that the current unimaginative, philistine pig-ignorant management have been unable to weave into a coherent whole.

I can't see it happening. Politically they wouldn't let it happen.

However it does get Allan Joyce and Co off the hook. They can destroy the business they are supposed to be managing then let EK take over and they get out with reputation and money intact. The owners I imagine would get their money back and collect probably some of the billions in cash lying around and the left over QF super fund.

I imagine the strategy would be to shut down international, use the domestic feed and sell off Jetstar probably with some propping up in one way or another. EK would ramp up flights to all Australian cities and would also collect free access to the Pacific, which would impress the Americans no end.

Maybe he's off to DXB to negotiate a swap....QF A380's for EK A350's...:8

As there are 6 more B747's approaching the next "D" check, they will join the rest of the fleet at Victorville. As no replacement aircraft have been ordered (or optioned), it's obvious that more international routes will have to be abandoned (or gifted to Emirates). The JNB route (currently very high yielding) is probably the easiest one to drop by selling seats on EK but this will be very unpopular with the passengers as it means a very significant increase in travel time. SAA may take the opportunity to have a near monopoly on the SA-OZ route by adding to their daily JNB-PER operation and fly direct services to Sydney (providing they have the aircraft available). Other potential winners out of QF abandoning the route are SingAir and Malaysian as flights from East Coast Ausralia to JNB via Changi or KL would have shorter travel times than via Dubai.

Perhaps a decent investigative journalist will run with this before QF announces it, thus making it more difficult for this incompetent management to proceed with this plan.

For as long as I have been around you'd think that I would know better than to postulate a sensible possibility as a likely outcome-like an EK buyout.

The government loan scenario is probably more likely, depressing as that is.

There must be a nifty German word to describe the happiness at keeping your airline alive a little longer coupled with the abject horror of watching your tax dollars further enable a pack of c*nts work to ensure its eventual extinction.

Precisely. The loan guarantee simply enables "the game" to be continued for longer, and hence maximise their bezel. It further enables the continuation of the asset strip, not only impoverishing the shareholders & employees, but also the taxpayer.

Not one additional dollar will be put into an Australian based business if the government does decide to back the debt. Rent seeking at its finest.

The rhetorical question is why wouldn't they try it on? They have nothing to lose, and the potential to pick-up a large windfall tax payer rent seeker bonus.
