Before this rumour grows to great heights, the fact is that several QF captains including 380 drivers have indicated to EK that if they ever consider DEC's then they are interested.

Plenty of QF people would rather see out the last 5 or so years of their career with a real airline rather than fly to Sin, Lhr and Lax.

Also, QF guys have been knocked back at interview with EK recently. They are not going to take any ego's, something quite common with some QF people. Those who have got in so far are some of the good guys who we would be better off not losing.

TineeTim

Well the excess of pilots is almost dried up, on the 747 there have been Captains and First Officers flying on some trips operating as Second Officers. I gather the 767 is now becoming short of crew.

I believe that's because the reduction in capacity hasn't happened yet. IIRC that reduction starts around April? The reduction in 747s coupled with no new A380s will produce much of the surplus. The real wild-card is what happens to the 767s and what about the A330s once Jet* are finished thrashing them?

breakfastburrito 17th Nov 2011 22:18

One of the thoughts going through my mind is that QF were happy to any reduction in numbers on THEIR TERMS and on THEIR TIMING. They need pilots to fly their aircraft right up to the day they get rid of it, then make crew redundant. In short, they though pilots would stick around to the bitter end no matter what, then get rogered.

Unfortunately for management, they appear to have "spooked the horses" with their actions. Pilots are taking their careers into their own hands. I suspect we will see all sorts of random shortages in various ranks on all types, with the exception of A380/744 Captains. This process has only just began, those leaving will have had applications in elsewhere months ago. This will very difficult for the nudist, as by definition, shortages will be completely unpredictable.

MACH082 17th Nov 2011 22:26

And they have spent millions training these guys over the years to watch them take that investment overseas.

I'd love to see the investment in the average 10 year pilot. Probably 3 type endorsements, 40 line sim sessions and plenty of courses.

To replace that is very expensive. Why do you think companies like EK are so keen to get it!

As usual Qantas will be caught with its pants down with a shortage of crew on the right aircraft, the right aircraft with the wrong configurations, the wrong aircraft on the right routes, and the right staff working for the opposition. Meanwhile the wrong staff will be trying to make the right decisions and the wrong pilots will be hired by the wrong HR people to fix the wrong decisions by the smartest men in the room who think they have the right stuff.

Give the little man a bonus!

Sorry, pushed submit before I was ready. One more quote I like:

QF now reminds me of my five year old when he uses my uniform as a dress up- he looks like a pilot, sort of but not quite. QF now looks like a real international airline, sort of but not quite.

Burrito,Keg,Tinee et al:
You speak a load of rubbish. My inquiries show that there has not been one Qantas pilot resign to go to Emirates since this started. There are a number who have taken LWOP to go however. Those who have taken LWOP still have their umbillical cords attached. What's new? If you were to take the AIPA line, all the best pilots have left to go to EK which implies that all the worst are left behind.

TineeTim 17th Nov 2011 23:44

You're wrong. Simple.

Additionally, what difference does it make if guys are going on LWOP? I know most of the guys who have gone/are going and none plan on coming back. They might but it's unlikely.

Keg 18th Nov 2011 00:01

I know of 4 prior to EK offering gigs to guys and gals on LWOP. Three of them were subsequently granted LWOP after EK changed the rules AFTER they had already resigned from QF but the resignation hadn't taken effect. One of them (744 F/O senior to me :ok: ) had already had his resignation take effect so he's definitely gone.

I'm not sure what that says about the quality of your 'inquiries' but it says a lot about your 'load of rubbish' assertion. :E

fatmike 18th Nov 2011 00:08

2 quick bites!
Simple question: are these guys still employed by Qantas? I think you'll find the answer is yes.

TineeTim 18th Nov 2011 00:14

I'm still here.

How simple do I have to make this?

You are wrong. Pilots, more than one, have RESIGNED from QF to take positions with EK.

Fatguyinalittlecoat 18th Nov 2011 00:18

Simple question: are these guys still employed by Qantas? I think you'll find the answer is yes.
So what if they are? What exactly is your argument?

I know one guy who is gone on LWOP. He calls it a bonus but was quite prepared to resign. He also has no intention of coming back. Insurance policy is the term he used.

fatmike 18th Nov 2011 00:25

Absolutely. If you go back to the year dot.
My post said "since this started" meaning say since August 14th ie since the proposed cancellation of longhaul flying ie since the touted view is that the Qantas sky is falling in and there is no future for Qantas other than gloom and doom.

TineeTim 18th Nov 2011 00:35

This is tedious. I read what you wrote.

My statement still stands- SINCE AUGUST 14TH, PILOTS HAVE RESIGNED FROM QF TO GO TO EK!

However, as the bloke in the coat wrote, what difference does it make? What is your point? Guys are leaving QF to go to EK. Presumably none are going because they prefer the weather in Dubai. More guys are in the queue to leave. Leaving EK aside, guys are leaving to go to other carriers. Lots of guys. Mostly mid level F/Os but S/Os are scheming as well.

Do you believe it's all hype? Everything is hunky dory? It will all be better this time next year?
If you believe any of those things, you are in a small, small minority.

Keg 18th Nov 2011 00:55

Comprehension obviously not your strong suit fatmike! :ugh: :E

fatmike 18th Nov 2011 00:57

Not at all.
The more that leave and the quicker they leave the quicker we get back to normal divisors and no assigned leave. The only thing that is better than that would be if those that leave are actually those who whinge the loudest. If the statements re EK not employing those with egos then sadly that hope is forlorn.

fatmike 18th Nov 2011 01:04

Keg,
For someone who refers to pilots continually as "drivers" and continually complains about the denigration of the profession and specifically the position of a captain, you are a great contradiction so I wouldn't go pointing your pious finger too often!:=:=:=

Keg 18th Nov 2011 01:06

I think QF will be thrilled if they could assign leave on the 744 fleet at the moment. Prior to the most recent slow down, there was talk of training excess 767 crew across to the 744 just so they could expedite that assignment of leave. Grounding four 744s from April delayed that plan but I suspect they won't be losing sleep over carrying 28 excess Captains and F/Os for a couple of years given how much excess leave there is on that fleet.

For someone who refers to pilots continually as "drivers" and continually complains about the denigration of the profession and specifically the position of a captain....
Sure you've got the right bloke?

Lookleft 18th Nov 2011 01:13

FM you made some statements you asserted were fact, several others said you were wrong, now you play the man and not the ball. You are either a tosser or a fool or both, now stick to the topic.

Yarra 18th Nov 2011 04:22

Applications to EK from QF Pilots have not either decreased nor increased in the past 6 months......

:ok:
