Eagle Minimums

As far as I'm aware, Eagle have been continualy interviewing for the past few months (and will continue to do so as long as NZ and CX keep up the hiring). Last I heard, the realistic criteria were around 1500 TT, 200+ multi, with a few exceptions.

There are many of us hovering just over the 1000 hr mark, with a decent amount of multi - how many current eagle applicants have significantly more than this? And does anyone (in the know) think we (low timers) are likely to get a shot in the near future, or will we have to wait a bit longer 'till we have more competitive figures? Some people seem to think 300 hrs, ATPLs and a MEIR will be enough soon - I think this is propaganda (although it has happened before!)

It would be great if recently interviewed pilots, or those with up-coming interviews could post their flight times at last update (Total, Multi, Actual I/F, Night).

Thanks in advance for your input:ok:

outboundjetsetter 22nd Jul 2004 22:40

Ive been keen for an interview for a while, have over 300 multi, quite alot of IF and 135 op experience +ATPLs...but just short of the 1000 tt requirement.I know I would make a great captain down the track..
Trickling along with part time twin flying gets a bit tedious.I want to work for eagle but if someone else decides to 'snap me up first' then thats the way the cookie will crumble. On the other hand I cant see anything wrong with Insurance requirments.... most pilots get a little restless every now and then...

splatgothebugs 23rd Jul 2004 02:26

Chaps,

It would pay not to get inpaitient about getting an interview. A year ago a 1000 hours multi was the general requirement.

Times do change however ;)

Apparently 1500TT is still what they like but the general lately has been around 1200 TT with 300 ME, some have got in with less ME and more TT but those figures are about correct.

I would suggest while you wait you bang out the ATPL's and your BGT so when your time comes (whatever company it is) you'll be grinning and can just cruise after your line training is done.

Stick with it your time will come, these are good times as far as hiring goes :ok:

Please pardon my ignorance, but who are "Eagle"?

Cloud Cutter 23rd Jul 2004 04:18

Thanks splat

I would suggest that most eligable candidates would have ATPLs and I thought you needed a BGT to even apply? I'm sure, being in our position a while ago, you know it's hard not to get impatient;) Noone wants to miss the boat!

Towering Q

If you don't know, you wont care (just like I'm not too interested in what Sunstate or Skippers are doing):D

Only mildly curious. Certainly have no intentions of applying with them, whoever they are. Too well established in my comfort zone at present.

I'm not particularly interested in what Sunstate or Skippers are doing either.

Cloud Cutter 23rd Jul 2004 07:33

Fair enough. Eagle Airways is one of the three Air NZ Link airlines (along with Mount Cook Airlines and Air Nelson), they operate Ratheon (Beech) 1900Ds.

that topic has been done to death before...try searching for TTMRA or visit your friendly CASA website.:ok:

Sqwark2004 26th Jul 2004 02:09

Cloud Cutter,

To answer some of your questions, I know of a couple of people who have around the 2200 TT & 1300 multi (mostly PIC) plus several ATPL's and they have yet to hear anything from Eagle.

Saying that, I also know of a lot of people in the same boat as you, around the 1000 TT mark with enough multi to get a command at Origin. So it looks as though the minima's of 300 multi, may be the bench mark for a bit longer but who knows about the TT requirements.

If it makes you feel any better, it sounds as though all bar 1 of the guys off the Origin J31 course have either started or been offered jobs by other airlines. So, they may be calling again soon, looking for a new bunch of newbies and they have no minimum requriements.

Good Luck.

Incidentreport

Wouldn't say I'm in the know with Origin.

In fact I wouldn't think anybody, other than those in Origin management (and only a few of them) know how they choose their pilots.

The last groundcourse had a bunch of guys all with well over 1000 hrs and 300 + multi. However in the past they have had people with as little as 650 TT and 25 multi.

I think it is more a case of who you know, and how much you are willing to grease, make calls, throw bags, check in pax etc

Good Luck

Its always interesting how somebody gets onto a threed about EAG or ORG ect and starts slagging them off.

Whatever your problems are incident report I suggest you keep them to yourself as nobody and I mean nobody cares or likes winjers.

I think some people have forgot that sometimes making a phone call or taking the time out to go see a prospective employer can do wonders for your chances of getting that phone call.;)

My centiments exactly splat.

incedentreport - if you don't care what Eagle's minimums are, how about not posting on the thread about Eagle Minimums!

Personally I have preferences, but I would be happy to work for any of NZs regional T/P operators. I can't understand this problem some people have with the interview process either. Many non-aviation corporations use similar HR selection processes. In saying that, I'm sure most of us know quite a few good people (and some not so good) who have missed out with Eagle.

At the end of the day, Eagle fly cool planes, and have the best rate of progression - I think a lot of the negative comments come from jealousy.

Just by chance, does anyone know when the next round of interviews are, and are the higher time, lower multi people that have been accepted in the last few rounds come from instructing positions or from GA multi jobs with operational experience.

belowMDA 28th Jul 2004 21:07

Splat, how about this; hire a suit for one day go to nelson and have a friendly chat with Mike and Neil for 40 mins then get your money back for that suit at almost twice the rate as eagle.

Cloud cutter, why don't you save the "I love the Eagle interview process" palava until you have been through it!! Once you have come through sucessfully and still love it then feel free to let us know.

righto, more about those Eagle minimums then...........

Cloud Cutter 28th Jul 2004 22:37

belowMDA, I’ll thank you not to put words in my mouth. I didn’t say I love the interview process, I said it is any companies right to use whatever process they see fit, to choose appropriate staff. If/when I’m given a shot, I am quite prepared not to get through – If I don’t it will not be the interview at fault, but the fact that I don’t fit the profile – simple as that. If people don’t like it, they are quite free not to apply.

Is everyone so egocentric that it’s automatically the interview's fault when they miss out? That’s like blaming the testing officer when you fail a flight test, or blaming ASL for making ATPL exams too difficult.

splatgothebugs 29th Jul 2004 04:20

Sorry Below MDA didn't realise that a Saab co was on $70K a year,

splat:ok:

Lets not get into sallary issues aye ;)

Point is that it is a small amount of money to lay out to get a job, and I'm sure that like most when you start toget around the correct hours for an interview you start putting some coin aside for a suit. :ok:

Swamp Donkey 29th Jul 2004 05:01

....but for the rigourous 3 day selection process shouldn't one go a little more upmarket than a hallenstein's suit?

Thump & Go 29th Jul 2004 07:37

belowMDA - good luck with the NSN interview or any other that you think are "just friendly chats". Anyone who thinks they're not being assessed continuously at any interview process is assured of coming unstuck.

"What do you mean the Cathay cocktail party isn't just a cocktail party!!?"
Ask someone you know who's had an interview with them if they thought getting p!ssed on all the free booze was a good idea since it was "just a friendly chat".

A couple of questions for you:
Does it cost more to hire a suit for....say 3-4 days than it does for 2 or 3?(assuming travel to & from interview)

Will it be "only" 40 minutes if you get all the questions wrong?

By the way, you'll only get your suit hire back if you pass the interview and the salary(check spelling splat;) )difference is more like $3500pa rather than "almost twice"

Thump

ps: Don't apply to QANTAS - they make you pay for the interview for God's sake!! The rotters!!

Sqwark2000 30th Jul 2004 04:02

From my understanding of the latest recruits for Eagle, they are still finding people with High-med time/min multi. Haven't seen a newbie with min total/min multi yet, but assume it will hit the jungle drums when it does.

All I can say to regional wannabes in NZ is....

It won't happen over night...... but it will happen.

If you are familiar with company recruiting processes and you want a go, then be prepared. Have some leave up your sleave ( for the interview and ground course if successful), coin for a suit, haircut etc. I hired a suit for $95 dollars. Picked it up Tues, returned it Mon. Nothing extra for the extra days.

If you are not happy about the process and don't want to work for that company then flag it!! Don't be a hypocrite .

As far as Eagle's process being "rigourous", it's not.

Half hour one day - essentialy to show you can fly an NDB (historical problems from previous recurits they are trying to reduce with future ones)

1 hr another - The interview you would expect from any company, which does focus on your Aviation knowledge

5 hr group discussions the next - An exercise to see how you get on with others, communicate - wether you stand your ground on an issue, or wether you let all opinions be heard and let the discussion flow wether you agree with someone or not. When it's your turn to lead a discussion on a randomly chosen aviation topic - you don't have to be the all knowing guru of your given topic, you just have to "lead" the discussion, encourage others to voice their views, ask for differing opinions etc.

Sure it's stressful when you are participating but take each step at a time and you could potentially enjoy it, maybe even learn something!!

Those who go into an interview postive, prepared and wanting the job will generally get through.

That's my ten cents worth.

Thump: while it is patently obvious that the interview is more than just a friendly chat (hence being called an interview rather than a natter), they make you relax, be yourself, share jokes with you and treat you with respect. I walked away from it and thought, Hey I actually enjoyed that, they're good blokes! And how about that; after our freindly chat they invited me to join their airline!

I do admit I got the figures wrong on the salary for which I humbly apologise. Having said that, the pay rise will take effect shortly!! Bloody marvelous!

Thump - practise what you preach dude. Dont you think its funny how alot of people bag it?

Eagle are Known for rejecting good people but the way things are going the tables are slowly turning in the pilots favour. As for origin, they have told all current crew what the plans are for upgrades and will be calling any new crew over the next week.

splatgothebugs 30th Jul 2004 23:42

incidentreport.

So you like bagging the company that puts food on your table????????

I admit we all have a bi:mad: h occasionally, but perhaps you shouldn't be there if you really have that many problems:confused:

So lets sum it all up.

Which comapny has the highest turn over rate from F/O to Capt = EAG
Which company has the highest progression to jets (AIRNZ, CX ect) = EAG
Which company has the lowest pay = EAG

If you want to stay in props for 5-8 years before moving on (theres nothing wrong with this) = NSN

Which company has good pay but your in props for the long haul = COOK

My point is all companies have there good and bad points and if the company you work for is not wright for you, simply move.

Nobody will think any less of you for making a move to keep yourself happy.

splat :ok:

Thump & Go 31st Jul 2004 00:00

Hey incidentreport, nice to hear back from you and by the way perfectly calm thanks - you'll probably notice from any of my posts I tend to deal with facts not urban legends.
As for the lollypop list, don't bother I have no requirement to have something in my mouth to feel good about myself.

Feel free to PM me with alledged sim failures (FACTS, not what the senior B-Cat at 'ABC' flying school heard from the brother of a guy who missed out whilst they were both on a charter to deepest darkest Hokitika!) - I wouldn't want to open that can of worms publically either.

Hmmm....asleep for a couple of years, I wish!
From memory, no-one bothered bagging Eagle when they flew Bandits - they just accepted that Eagle was the starting point for turbine RPT in NZ and got on with it. At that time Air NSN were able to ask for much higher time guys and as a general rule didn't take too many GA guys.
The bagging phase has been somewhat shorter than years friend, only with the intro of the contentious 3 day interview have people jumped on the "it's cool to bag Eagle bus".
Are you sure you've been around for years???

Sorry for the confusion re the Origin comment, clearly if you worked there you would be aware of their robust candidate selection criteria and interview process and would have no problem with networking (read ar$e-kissing as you so politely put it;) ). No such implication was meant.

As for your last comment - WRONG again!! If I look to the right all I see is blue sky and the nacelle of a TPE-331.
Or I could be the guy that does the sim evals.Work that one out.
;)

BelowMDA - a good time to be staring with Air NSN - new type, more money, sounds like the guys worked pretty hard to reach agreement.
I'm surprised to hear your Eagle interview was conducted without respect & in a less than friendly atmosphere - that is disappointing.:( I thought Eagle always asked for a joke?
I agree that ideally you want to walk away feeling like you're going to work with a good bunch of guys - sounds like you made the right choice. Must be your shout since you're the rich one.:ok:

An interview is an interview.

Be prepared and do some study before hand so that you don't look like a D!CK.

1. Look presentable - Suit or not? Doesn't matter I didn't. Look presentable. Shirt and tie - tucked in and looking neat.

Appearance is everything for a start. You don't see shabby pilots do you? Well mostly all of them.

2. Prepare you CV and have current log book and hours up to date. Results of ATPLs (If you have them - doesn't matter if you don't have any, just say you're doing the study for them at the moment)

CV, references, exam results and anything important - get a photocopy for them so that you can leave them a copy.

3. Study. Get the history on Eagle (just an overview), how many pilots, how many planes, where they fly to, GM etc.

The plane you fly, know it. They genreally ask about it. Where you fly etc....

4. Techie questions - if you look through previous threads on Pprune you will find most of the questions for their tech quiz. Not too hard but doo the study.

In the interview if you don't know something say you don't know. Or say I don't know but could give my best guess and the reasons behind it. If you're going to lie to them they will know and just let you talk away until you completely stuff up.

They're not there to trap you but they will let you dig yourself a hole if you want.

Have a good couple of questions for them. Good questions. Interesting questions that they themselves have to think over.

ie. "You guys have obviously been in the same place I am right now getting interviewed, how did you react to the questions?"

or

"What are Eagle looking for in an interview, what sort of pilot do you want?"

Hard to point questions but not over the top and certainly ones to make them think. Worker for a friend of mine.

4. Equiette (sp?) Don't lie, don't be an arse, don't be too pushy. Sure you want to sell yourself but coming across as a used car sales man, wouldn't do the trick.

Smile and keep eye contact. If nervous a few deep breaths, drink a little of the water. Don't gulp it down. Say to them "Look I'm a bit nervous at the moment sitting in the hot seat but I hope you understand"

When answering their questions look them in the eye and talk to both of them. Don't fixate on one person.

At the end shake their hands and thank them for their time.

If and when you find out send a followup note to thank them. Successful or not this leaves a good impression with them. Spell check it.

I should really spell check this response
:)

As regards times. It would be great to see people coming in with 1000TT and 500 multi but in reality at the moment. 100 multi and 500-800TT. Not too sure if this is realistic or not but show them you're keen.

Eagle is the start on a busy career. From Eagle you can go places. Whether it be 1 year to 5 years with Eagle look upon it as a learning experience for greater things.

Take away the things you want from this response. Don't dwell on the negative sides with the company. All companys have negative sides to them. All have good sides to them also.

Eagle salary is not the greatest but it is a company that can lead you onto other better companies.

Sectre Fidem.

Please let me interrupt for second and then you guys can get back to spanking yourselves silly over whatever airline you work for.

The fact of the matter is that most GA pilots will take whatever turbine job they are offered first, that’s what I did and I’m having fun.
In saying that I have started to notice a certain reluctance among some pilots to work for Eagle, to the point where some GA pilots are not even applying for Eagle.

Is there any truth to the rumour that a senior Eagle Manger walked into a ground school and said “You are the best of a bad lot” if so then I would not want to work for a company that welcomed it’s pilots to the company in that fashion. Not very polite if you ask me. Perhaps that is why he can only get “bad” pilots applying to his airline? Maybe they have heard rumours like this?

While we are on the Eagle topic, what is with certain Eagle pilots being the self designated “Airport police” and using “smart” remarks on the radio at unattended airports around the country? How about a little professionalism from you big professional turbine drivers.
I have been out of GA for a few years now and surprisingly enough have never had a smart remark directed at me from an Eagle aircraft, however it was a semi regular occurrence for me and my workmates when we were flying light aircraft.
Isn’t that what the schoolyard bully does? The bully takes the Mickey or picks on the little guy to inflate his own ego in front of others. I feel sorry for these people, obviously they do not have enough to do in their own aircraft so they have to watch and critique others, whatever happened to minding your own business? How about a little manners chaps? Please?
If you have a serious concern about operation of another aircraft then there are proper channels to use, please use them if you feel so strongly, or is it perhaps only you that has the problem……
Would you have the same smart remark to make to a jet on approach to AA/WN/CH?
And as for senior Eagle captains ringing GA pilots up after hours to reprimand them for the way they operate their aircraft and threatening them with damage to their career. Shame on you. You Bully. You know who you are. Shame. What are you thinking?

As for recruiting methods Eagle has theirs and other airlines have their own, each airline uses what works for them. It’s their sandpit and Tonka toys, get over it. If you don’t like the sound of it then don’t apply or withdraw your application.
The industry is moving at the moment so if you are a lucky person you will be able to pick and choose to a certain degree. Pick the airline that you want to fly for, research the process, do the study and get in there. Go hard, good luck, sell yourself.

Take it easy people it’s just a job, what gets done on the weekends is what counts.

I’m of fishing Please continue whacking off in my absence.

Peace
