With jet time you get jobs
So after a few years of never hearing back from the usual suspects in Australia I went overseas for a jet job.
Now that someone else has invested time and money in me Australian airlines are now offering interviews.
So the pilot shortage seems to be a shortage of pilots who got training outside Australia and come back not needing type ratings.

What I mean is Australia seems to want other people to pay for your training and they just wanna reap the rewards.
When I applied to Alliance I was told I wasnt competitive because I did not have multi crew time.
"But the ad says 250 multi PIC or multi crew". Well we dont want to pay for the MCC course. If you get your MCC we will interview you.
So it seems they just wanted another company to pay for my MCC.

You always had a choice to stay in Aus or go expat.
I went expat, never a happier moment.
Would have loved a realistic shot at a LHS in Oz but unlikely.

So I’ve been there done that (ok maybe have an irrelevant tatt to prove it)...

Yes I didn’t articulate what I was saying properly. I didn’t mean please help me in the job sense, it’s the understanding of how it is.

For me anyway remaining an expat is the most obvious choice. Madness in Oz off topic but the AFL crowd behavioural officers WTF, good to see a fast fix but what the fark were they thinking???

If an employer wants applications from people with an MCC and jet time why dont they advertise that?
The whole 1000TT and 250 multi PIC is a bit tiresome when what they want is 2500TT, multi turbine PIC and MCC.

Employers can ask what they want and employ who they want pilotchute. They’re not there to meet your every need.

That was from a Dash operator. I called them to ask what I could do to improve my CV. My CV was fine apparently but my total was too low (2000TT)
I was told by HR that those numbers I mentioned above make me "competitive".
If you want to dig a bit deeper my Twin Otter time wasnt deemed acceptable by Alliance because it wasnt a "transport category" aircraft.

I don’t see what your whinge is about Chute. It’s just market demand. In 5 years time they will probably have to accept even lower than what you first applied with because apparently we’ll be short of pilots.
Sadly, pilotchute is correct. Australian companies seem to require the one thing that you don’t have on your CV. Won’t be long before some HR drongo will demand Cold WX Ops experience as a pre-requisite.
I left Oz in 1987 and never returned. Never, ever regretted a single moment had an interesting, fun and lucrative career. I strongly recommend taking the risk and going OS, suddenly your horizons, networks and opportunities expand dramatically.

+ 1 on going overseas if your situation allows, especially if you are single and willing to try something different. You quickly realize that their is a big world outside of Australia. Career progression is generally a whole lot faster and you can make some serious cash in the contract world.
