VARA Moranbah

Saw on one of the storm chaser websites/Facebook that a VARA ATR was damaged on the ground during an apparent supercell storm this afternoon 16/11/15.

Word has it that PAX were on board prior to departure and it was rolled onto a wing and moved the aircraft some way. Reluctant to quote it exactly as there may be some embellishment as is usually the case.

Anyone have any genuine info??

THERE are reports a plane has been damaged as severe storms ripped through Moranbah this afternoon.

Wind gusts of 156 km/h were recorded in the town at 5.19pm according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Radio station Zinc 101.9 says they've been contacted through Glenn N Claire Bradke on Facebook to say their Virgin plane and the aiport itself are both damaged.

"We had just boarded the plane and the storm hit, 160 kph winds rolled the plane over and jammed a wing into the Tarmac, then lifted the plane and pushed it about 50m then spun us around. Full on. All ok, airport damaged and closed until further notice. Beer o'clock now, I tell ya. FIFO yeeeew," they wrote.
From Qld Times today so it must be true!

Looks like the work experience kids are writing for the ABC at Virgin Australia plane spun around, blown down runway during severe storm in Moranbah, Queensland - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

A Virgin Australia passenger plane has been spun around and blown down the runway
But the photo shows the ATR sitting at the terminal!!!!!!!

And again:

"An ATR 72 aircraft became destabilised while stationary at Moranbah Airport as a result of an unusually strong wind squall," a statement from the company said.

"The aircraft corrected itself and no passengers or crew were injured in the incident.
What a clever aircraft to be able to "correct itself"

And again:

It is understood another two light aircraft at the terminal were also overturned.
Underneath a photo of 2 Cessna's on their roofs, talk about stating the bleeding obvious. Then again maybe the writer thought that Cessna's are always parked on their roofs

What a pathetic attempt at reporting.

I recall a severe storm passing through Bundy in the late 80's/early 90's. Several lighties damaged, including a Twotter that snapped a tie-down and appeared to be mounting an Islander.

There was a Sunnies Shorts & QPA Mohawk on the main apron. One was spun through 180º, one had its rudder blown back on the fin (also through 180º), and when the Nomad was being pre-flighted, it was noted that the flaps on one wing were retracted, whilst on the other wing they were bent so to appear partially extended.

Whilst the reporting might be dubious, I could well imagine the ATR with its narrow wheel track being blown side-on to a wing tip.

The only thing missing from the article was "experts say this type of event will become more frequent due to climate change"....

I've heard of an ATR scrape a wingtip while parked overnight at the terminal of NZNV a number of years ago.

The ATR is limited to a 60 knot wind on the ground without being sheltered or tied down. So no surprises there that it got blown around a bit.

OMG!!!!!!!!

CC (do you mind if I call you that?)

I too lay awake at night, frustrated at the lack of responsible journalism when it comes to reporting important aviation matters!!

You wouldn't believe it, but I happened to be at a BBQ yesterday and being the resident 'aviation expert' I was grilled on such journalistic shortcomings and I found myself explaining how pathetic they are in this country!!!

Anyway, I found myself home alone with my thoughts that night (despite what I thought were some promising signs of a comely young lass who seemed interested, but alas..) and pacing up and down at 3am didn't calm me at all!!!!

So I made myself a herbal tea, (Organic Apple and Rose hip) and you wouldn't believe it but my stress just melted away and I thought to myself, "You know what? I'm better than those wanna be ABC work experience Aviation journalists!!!!!

Anyway, thought I'd share my story with you and hope you're feeling better, much love and kisses

The Big C.

Nice work by the Flight Attendant. Checking on the passengers straight away, despite having just received a bit of a fright!

What's Next

The Engineers have assessed the damage, sent photos & have reported to ATR in France.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR FVZ

Will CASA provide a P.U.S to get it back to maintenance OR carry out repairs on-field

Either way, another ATR cash burning headache

I heard that the Dash in Chinchilla was written off, the damage being so bad!

Understand it was ferried unpressurised, due the hail damage, did see it last week and doesn't look to bad but what you can't see is top of the fuselage or wings etc.

Insurance VOID ?

Guru Marty says the ATR 72 AFM states: aircraft to be secured in ground winds exceeding 60kts & chocking alone isn't suffice to the following.

Reports suggests that it ( the wind speed ) exceeded that during this incident

DOES THAT MEAN THAT A BREACH OF THE AFM HAS OCCURRED

DOES INSURANCE COVER BREACHES TO AFMs

Ryan might be in for Tea & Biscuits AGAIN

It was a freak storm. I don't think anyone could have predicted how strong the winds were going to get.

Do you have a malice against someone there?
