Qantas bumps up fares again due to fuel prices

QANTAS has decided to raise its airfares for the third time in two months due to increased prices for aviation fuel with big increases on international flights.
All flights to overseas destinations are set to increase by up to $280 each way, meaning steep prices for people travelling overseas for the northern hemisphere summer.
Fares to Europe will increase by $580 return, flights to the US and Canada by $300, fares to South Africa and South America by $400 return and flights to Asia and Hawaii will increase by $290 return.
Domestic airfares, plus those to New Zealand will increase by five per cent from April 28, meaning the price of a lead-in Melbourne to Sydney fare will go up to $117 one-way.

Other examples of one-way lead-in fares from Melbourne sees Adelaide flights at $110, up from $105. A fare to canberra goes up from $115 to $120 and one-way to Auckland goes from $287 to $289.

Today's rise follows fare increases in March and in February and they are all for the same reason - big rises in the price of jet fuel.

Qanats chief Alan Joyce, due to address an aviation lunch today, said the price of jetfuel was at its highest level since 2008.
The price had jumped from $US88 a barrel last November, to $US120 in February with the price today being around $US136 a barrel.
Mr Joyce said it would be some time before the surcharges could be cut.
"With fuel prices at record highs, even if the fuel price begins to decrease it will be some time before we will be able to decrease the fuel surcharge,'' he said.
"The revised fuel surcharges cover less than half of the increase in fuel cost for the Qantas International business for next year.''
Qantas will spend $2 billion on fuel in the second half of the year, about $300 million more than the first half.
"Our international surcharges and Domestic, Regional and Tasman fares remain under review, and further increases will be considered if necessary,'' Mr Joyce said.
