Jetstar working conditions
On a recent JQ flight from DPS to MEL the pilots apologised on the PA for the delayed departure as they'd had a slow flight up to DPS due headwinds. There were only two pilots mentioned on the intro, a Capt/ F/O crew. I made a few quick calculations.
After a late afternoon sign on, they have a duty time of close to 14 hours, back of the clock, with flight time totals around, say, 11 hours give or take. I assume a two man crew from the PA introduction.
How do these poor buggers stay awake on the way back.Obviously this legal. Secondly, how much delay can they accept for such things as weather, ATC or ground handling delays, before going "out of hours."

At VB we can be rostered for 13:15 with an extension of up to 2 hours at pilots discretion.
(2 crew - sign on between the hours of 0800 and 1259 - two sectors)
(10:15 if sign on between 2200 and 0559)
Guess what they currently ROSTER 13:10!

I think the MEL-DPS-MEL A330 service uses two separate tech crew. Ie MEL-DPS hotel, next day DPS-MEL. It used to be a back-of-the-clock return with 3 crew but I'm pretty sure the boys stop in Bali for 24 hours these days before doing one sector home hence the two crew.
I guess when he said that they had a slow flight up he was meaning the previous crew.
Hope this helps. Doesn't answer the duty limit part of your question, somebody else can do that!

The significant impairment caused by fatigue is now well documented. However CASA, always willing to please airline management, has granted exemptions to CAO 48.1 to many airlines.
Was not CAO 48 a safety regulation? Who in CASA decides the pilots of a particular company will be ok to fly beyond the CAO 48 limits?

Limitations on total duty include duty sign on time, number of sectors to be flown, flight deck duty time, if crew is augmented, amount of time flown in darkness (if applicable), and of course cumulative duty in 7, 14, 28, 365 days etc (again, if applicable). That is all general guff and the operator may have exemptions to some of the standard limitations, but they won't be much different from standard.
Rosters must be within the above limitations, and are usually based on a reasonable block to block time. Extensions to duty must be operationally necessary (not planned for or anticipated), so a crew could be useless to the airline if they cop a siginificant delay prior to departure!

Billy, PFG Pure Fg Gold.
More like look out person who sits in office plotting day in day out how to best fatigue you.
Lookout if fatigue is traced as a factor in any accident you may be involved in

only problem is that Cx recruiting have standards
that most Jq pilots cannot achieve. They're not at Jq by choice.

Regardless of what you are implying with standards, it can be a difficult thing to stop an urge to come home (more so when the wife/girlfriend/children/family are on your heels).
Hope you can stand by your words in the future guys (long, long after you have forgotten posting this). Once they are gone, you cant get those years back.
Sounds like you'd be overqualified for JQ/VB anyhow.
Anyhow life goes on - each to their own. Enjoy.
Ha ha classic, I turned down Cathay for one of the 'tin-pot' operators flyin jets in Aus. Only did 700hrs with them before getting a job paying significantly more than I would be earning at Cathay and I don't have to live in a place I don't want to. Point of my post?? Individuals make their own choices. If you want to live in HK and earn average money, go for it mate, I've made different choices.....that doesn't mean my flying standards are lower than yours, in fact I don't think it bares any relevence to them at all.....You know outahere you come across as very arrogant when you say things like
Have a good day, framer

This must be too simple i guess, if you're rostered 13:10 and the limit is 13:15, just say no if you're running >5 late. If you all did they'd put a better buffer on it. Pilot discretion for extension, your call, and nothing anyone else can do, trust me, they're not gonna thank you if you extend and bend their jet. Just a thought, or does the almighty dollar rear its ugly head here???
I'm thinking if you're on a pretty sweet deal then share the love man ...
