To be cynical it seems like a PR play really. Although a different union, Air NZ are currently having a "difference of opinion" with EPMU in regards to the Zeal320 contract.

A shock tactic like this really grabs the public attention and the way in which the media reported on this could potentially help swing general public support behind Air NZ and against NZALPA/EPMU.

It's ridiculous that this was left until the eleventh hour to be addressed.

This seems like a very inflexible piece of legislation that I'd imagine will affect many employers quite adversely, right when they really don't need it. A bit of common sense would go a long way. I think it's fair to say there are bigger fish to fry at present.

Interesting situation for NZALPA - Ts and Cs at one end vs. jobs at another.

Obvious, yet effective PR stance taken by Parton.

It's amazing what a little mis-information leads to...

I am in full support of the extensive efforts of my represententatives (NZALPA) over the last SIX MONTHS OR MORE to attempt to get Airways to take this new legislation seriously, particularly in the eleventh hour when the company had all but thrown in the towel...rest/meal breaks were never going to "go away" or be ignored and I am pleased that we have reps like JD and JT that voluntarily work selflessly on our behalf. Well done guys!!!

I am extremely disappointed (but not surprised) by the reactions of the media and our largest customer (AirNZ)...they should try and flesh out the real truth before talking publicly or bursting into print.

Nicely said, Slackie, couldn't agree more.

Now why on Earth would they want the real truth broadcast?
It would seem to me that what has been reported is pretty much exactly what ANZ (and the Government) would want to be reported.
I was a little surprised at Mr Keys statement, given that (from what I've read/heard) the (then) Minister of SOE and Minister of Labour were informed of likely closures as a result of this legislation back in October 08, and were reportedly OK with that.
If that's true, well go figger.

Law is law and it applies to all.

Thanks NZALPA for you efforts in resolving this issue.

It annoys me intensely that Airways have again allowed their ATC staff to be fingered in the public eye.

In my mind Airways and more particularly the HR Section (because they must have known about the law change) need a public roasting!! Somebody should be terminated!!
