J* Returns to Darwin

According tothe NT News, a J* A320 returned to Darwin because they did not have the International paperwork on board. After collecting said paperwork and refuelling, it again departed for Singapore. It eventually arrived in Singapore at 0130 am. It would appear that the passengers where not happy campers, especially when they were handed a free bottle of water, but were expected tp pay for any snacks. You would pity the passengers travelling from Cairns to Singapore.

What is 'International Paperwork?' A GenDec? Haven't they heard of a Fax Machine?

I hope it wasn't a crew passport!

If it was the lack of approach plates for SIN then they are right up there with QF who have occasionally left Perth without plates for JNB.

Whilst not a defence, I would imagine that after a whole roster of split-arse 30min domestic turn arounds, the 2nd sector that day, on to SIN would probably seem much like any other.

Not exactly in the groove.

They should have a Cert. and Docs folder like big brother do. I think one of the problems is that the first sector to DN is a domestic sector so if you forget to check the CofR etc on the turn around in DN then it is all too late.

dizzylizzy -

I have experienced something similar (and equally as embarrassing!) at your beloved QF. These things happen.

Hey Ditzy,

would NEVER have happened back in the good ol' VQ days! That sort of stuff doesn't happen up our way of course - just a quick call on the satphone and bingo...exemption granted.

PS. Hi from Trophy wife

The "paperwork" left behind was in fact the Jeppesen chart library. J* pilots are required to buy and maintain their own jepps for the domestic operation. When it comes to the international sectors they are supposed to uplift the library from the departure port ( ie the ground agent is supposed to bring them onto the aircraft) . This apparently cuts costs as the company doesnt have to buy and maintain sufficient jepps to keep two sets onboard the couple of aircraft that fly the international sectors. I bet the accountants didnt factor in the cost of a return, including the fuel wasted to reduce to max landing weight ( 7 t was the figure I heard ), not to mention the bad press and missed connections of the QF and BA code share pax!

ditzyboy.......In any operation you will get technical snafu's and pax problems such as sickness and of course the occasional weather problems but I have never seen or heard of anything like this in QF Long Haul....

But as they say...."You get what you pay for"

So a junior admin type gets fired for not loading the correct nav bag, the pilots get an official letter on file as a warning and problem sovled. What about the gutless managers who are more worried about thier job than standing up to their bosses and protecting these people and putting in place a better ( more exspensive) system.

Longhaul returns

I don't know about paperwork, but QF 744s have returned to LHR a couple of times due insufficient potable water.
A real money saver that one, dump 100 tons of A1 to go back for weight saving one ton of H2O !

Yeah come on Dodgy....I have a faint recollection about fog and Perth and a PA about ditching....is that the one?
...."You get what you pay for"
How much do you have to pay for a ditching PA?
