Rex drama at SYD yesterday

What on earth was going on with the saab spewing smoke yesterday (3/8/08) at Sydney (Rex 677?). 6 fire units in attendance, Sydney Fire Commander urging the crew to shut down the offending (No. 1) engine but the crew taxied back to the terminal with both running. That much smoke is serious, what does a cooked CT7 cost?

Obviously there is more to it than met my eyes and ears, so please explain.

I wouldn't be planning on "swapping rego" and taking the same flight out if I had just cooked an engine.

Didn't they ignore a GA Pilot's warning about a main wheel wobble in BHI ( or some other far flung outback spot ) a couple of months ago too?

I would find the two issues that you mention ACMS, far worse than anything that has occured at Qantas!

With the QF problems it appears the crew reacted in the professional manner to which they are trained.

With the Rex problems I'm not too sure.

What would you expect from a Cpt with 2000 total hours (and only been on the saab for 6 months) and an FO with a bare commercial!!!

I would'nt fly with them with such inexprienced crews....

Both crew are very experienced in their own right and followed procedure accordingly. The wheel falling off was caused by a internal failure of the component and not something that could have been identified on the ground during a walk around.

The instructor of the 'said' GA pilot (a student) came out the very next day and opposed his students views.

There seems to be some bias toward rex and suggest you should get your facts straight before you start slinging **** on any company.

This is about the smoke incident, not the tyre incident.

No indication wheel was about to fall off Rex plane: pilot

LOCAL flying instructor Ken Pidcock says Regional Express could not have avoided a wheel falling off one of its Saab 340 planes shortly after take-off on Sunday.
The Rex plane lost one of its right-hand dual wheels shortly after taking off from Orange Airport at about 2pm on Sunday.

The Rex flight was still able to land safely in Sydney because the Saab 340 is designed to still operate safely even without one dual wheel.

Mr Pidcock, who operates Orange Ultra-Flight Centre, was taxiing behind the Saab 340 when it took off.

Mr Pidcock has denied claims that it was possible for witnesses to see the wheel was on the verge of falling off before take-off.

“After the plane took off and I saw the wheel fall off I contacted the pilot,” Mr Pidcock said. “He said he’d get back to me in a second.

“No person in Orange was in a better position than me and there’s no indication that anyone in Orange was able to see that wheel was about to fall off.”

An internal Rex investigation has been launched and a report is being prepared for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

Did they taxi back to the bay with both eng running or not.? Did the crew "swap" into another aircraft and "keep going".?

Yusef...Good question and if crew kept going, who did the debrief {and called in a replacement crew} (as per PPM ??)

As a matter of fact which I believe has been answered substantially by Shapeshifter, there was NO such warning. Thus they did not ignore anything.

Just coz Air Nsn have cooked a couple of Dash8 motors this way doesnt necessarily make it possible on the saab. From distant memory you need rpm in the accessory gbox for ign on the saab. Maybe those more current than me will confirm or otherwise...

IMHO you should never knock a crew for thier actions unless you were in the cockpit at the time.

Suggesting that someone with 2000 hours cannot be a good captain is like implying that someone with 5000 hours must be a good captain. Experience helps no doubt, but it isn't everything.

I believe last night a REX SAAB returned from YMRY to YSSY with an engine shut down. Called a PAN and all. Made it back OK I believe.
