Am i the only one a little worried about the implications of this!
In light of toadays modern world of terrorism and general paranoia about it all, am i the only one who is just a little worried about the implications of this event, no security system currently in place can prevent it.
Police are hoping to interview passengers from a Virgin flight to Melbourne from Hobart after a stink bomb smelling of rotten eggs was set off in the cabin.
The ``innocuous substance'' was released as the jet was approaching Melbourne Airport, a spokeswoman for the airport said today.
``The airline alerted authorities and they responded,'' she said. ``There were no evacuations required.''
Detectives believe the odour came from a broken glass vial containing a clear clear liquid giving off a `rotten egg' smell, Victoria Police spokeswoman Stacey Mair said.
She said the plane landed about 8pm (AEST) and police were alerted to the incident about 9.30pm.
Police were last night considering whether to lay charges over the incident, but have so far been unable to speak to passengers onboard the flight. They are hoping to do this today.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) are now assisting them with their investigation.

Police are searching for a passenger who set off a "stink bomb" that filled the cabin pf a Melbourne-bound flight with the smell of rotten eggs.
The gas was released in the cabin of the Virgin Blue plane as it descended to Melbourne Airport last night.
"The aircraft was landing at about 8pm when a strong odour was released into part of the plane," police spokeswoman Stacey Mair said.
"Detectives believe the odour came from a broken glass vial which contained a clear liquid which was giving off a 'rotten egg' smell."
Ms Mair said the aircraft was emptied as normal after landing, with no passengers or crew requiring treatment and police were called.
"The combined Federal Police and Victoria Police investigation will continue with charges possible at a later stage," Ms Mair said.

The punters lugging on multiples of 100 proof Smirnoff, etc also give me the willies: 'Authorities blamed the crash on a fire set by a passenger who bought seven insurance policies before boarding the flight, insuring his life for $170,000.' http://aviation-safety.net/database/...?id=20020507-1
On the other hand, 'rotten eggs' could just have been DJ's entree into catering...

Folks,
you appear to be missing the point here. H2S (hydrogen sulphide) - rotten egg gas, or whatever you want to call it has the potential to be a very deadly gas.
Refer to this site - http://www.npi.gov.au/database/subst...ofiles/49.html for more information about H2S.
Ponder this....if they could get a vial of H2S on board what about something else???? I know that the tech crew have their own O2 supply but what about the rest?
I hope they find the perpetrator and they get what is coming to them.
Tinkicker...

My God, we're so paranoid. We sound like...........Americans?? Stink bomb.....who cares??? If they can get Hydrogen sulphide on now.....well jeez, that makes it pretty obvious they can get mustard gas on board...or maybe a bit of Bird flu?? I'm never flying again.......and I'm buying a big gun to protect myself.

More likely it was an H2S capsule available at novelty and joke shops.

And sort of related, have the fines for those dumb 'I've got a bomb in my bag' comments helped at all? I get the impression they're still popping up almost as much as they used to - time to raise the stakes maybe.
