AIR New Zealand has warned that staff across its operations - not just in engineering and maintenance - may have to make sacrifices to keep the airline competitive and stop it sending more New Zealand jobs overseas.

The airline announced yesterday it would send the heavy maintenance of its wide-body aircraft engines to either Germany or North America next year, resulting in the loss of 110 jobs.

But after winning major concessions from engineering unions over the wage conditions of maintenance workers, Air NZ has held off until February from making a decision on whether to send offshore the heavy maintenance of its long-haul aircraft. This could result in the loss of a further 507 jobs.

The decision comes after the NZ Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union presented the airline with a last-ditch proposal to keep heavy maintenance work in NZ.

Countering the airline's plans to save $NZ100 million ($93 million) over five years by sending long-haul engine and aircraft heavy maintenance overseas, the union has proposed a cut in overtime pay and 300 job losses to keep work in NZ.

Air NZ chief executive Rob Fyfe said the union proposal did not "sufficiently close the gap between outsourcing and keeping the work here in New Zealand". But he said he was willing to find ways to close the gap.

"Certainly I won't describe myself as confident at this stage but it's worth a try," he said.

The EPMU's national secretary, Andrew Little, said he was confident Air NZ could keep its heavy maintenance in NZ. "We're only a couple of million dollars a year apart," he said.

Mr Fyfe hinted, without specifying where, that the airline may attempt to extract wage concessions from other workers.

"Certainly, engineering is not the only part of the business [where] we have competitive issues," he said.

Air NZ's decision on outsourcing maintenance overseas is seen as a yardstick for Qantas.

Qantas's executive general manager engineering, David Cox, said: "Today's [Air NZ] announcement confirms that the issues being confronted by Qantas's engineering and maintenance operations are also clearly being faced by other airlines worldwide.

"The engineering and maintenance businesses of many major carriers are being outsourced to maintenance repair and overhaul providers, which are providing rates 20 per cent below what is achievable in Australia and many other countries," Mr Cox said.

Qantas wants to cut the take-home pay of its maintenance workers by up to 20 per cent through reductions in shift penalties.

It is unclear where Qantas wants to send its maintenance. Air NZ has looked at facilities in China, Europe, North America and Brazil.

We're in for a fun ride!

Air NZ send widebodies to Germany? Lufthansa is sending its A330s/A340s to a LH Technik facility in Manila. Lufthansa has its narrowbody fleet maintained everywhere else in Europe but Germany (Shannon, Ireland, Malta etc).

And in the North American market all airlines are outsourcing aswell, except American Airlines.
They have increased their maintenance department and are picking up maintenance from all the other airlines.
So its a matter of cutting jobs to save money or sticking your neck out to make money. And the chances of air NZ management sticking their necks out to make money are pretty slim.
I guess craig sinclair is asked on a regular basis why he laid off John Mounce, coz engineering is not the jewel in the crown now!!
Imagine getting paid all that money to stuff up.
life is really strange.
