Air New Zealand increase order

Air NZ doubles Boeing order
26 October 2005

Air New Zealand said today it had placed firm orders for another two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft costing $US117 million ($NZ168m) each, in addition to the two it already has on order.

The announcement comes as the airline prepares for the delivery of the first of eight new B777-200ER aircraft this Friday.

New chief executive Rob Fyfe said the Government-controlled airline had been guaranteed firm delivery slots for the two additional aircraft.

"This is a most desirable position for us to be in given the unprecedented sales success of the Boeing 787 model and enables us to plan for the airline's long-term needs," he said.

The Dreamliner makes significant use of lightweight high-tech composite materials to deliver operating efficiencies and customer comfort, including higher humidity levels and a more comfortable, lower cabin altitude.

They have a range of 14,800km-15,700km range.

While Boeing has yet to confirm actual configuration details, it is expected that the B787-9 model will offer the same range capability with 20-50 more seats.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAs part of its international long-haul fleet strategy, Air New Zealand plans to have all its eight B777-200ER aircraft in service by early 2007 and introduce the B787 aircraft during 2010/2011.

More aircraft, new uniforms and still laying off people! I understand Mr Fyfe has "other" matters at hand that may cost him $ as well!

Wouldn't have to do with a "female" would it??

So, all the good work that the company has been trying to do over the last 3 years, all down the drain.
Rumours are rife! (Hmm, rhymes with Fyfe)

747's going away (well 1, and I think that's old news)
Stopping recruiting (what about those on yes letters)
Parking up A320s, whose - who knows?
A320 courses cancelled??
Redundancies???
All narrow-bodies over to Freedom???
Contract F/As given the boot on 25th Dec??
No more 737 courses/training???

Be nice to get some actual communication from the top!

I work for ANZ and my job is under threat so when I read that they are increasing the number of aircraft it just makes my blood boil.

I will probably find out just before Xmas if I am going to be made redundant. Sadly we do not have a strong Union like the engineers.

Mr Teek knows what the go is there Matty. I thought I was being acute! Issues with a former secretary I believe.

Perhaps 'the top' need to do a CRM course and improve their communication! Hang in there flygirl et al, it's very sad , looks like a lot of people and families across the group are going to be affected.

Perhaps if that terrible list of Teeks is bourne out we could get Ralphie back to fix it all again!

Gee, next minute the company will want talks about cherry-picking the best from the two contracts (ANZ/F-dom) from a company point of view.

Oops, too late.

Maybe, ratification will take about 2 years.....say 2008!

I also can't see why the following is his claim to fame! Wouldn't anyone in the same boat have done the same thing?
There was no enemy action!
And it's not like Townsville is in the middle of the Indian Ocean!!

Exerpt from NZ Herald........ 22.10.05
A 22-year-old Rob Fyfe got a call from the Townsville control tower - the Royal New Zealand Airforce officer had to make a decision, and quickly. A Skyhawk jet had flipped on the runway while landing and it was up to him to figure out what to do with it.

With a plane disabled on the runway, other jets overhead had nowhere to land.

Fyfe's cool head while organising cranes and a flatbed truck to move the crippled plane went a long way to make his name among the Air Force top brass.

The United States-produced Skyhawk manual had demonstrated a less delicate method of getting a stricken Skyhawk off the runway: using a bulldozer to push it off into a big hole.

" ... We couldn't afford to do that ... as New Zealanders we had to be a bit more ingenious," said Fyfe.

His work meant the plane eventually flew again, as did the pilot, who was lucky to survive the landing.

It is this sort of nimble decision making that saw Fyfe promoted to Flight Commander in charge of maintenance of the Air Force's Skyhawk Squadron aged 24. End Exerpt

Sounds like the spin-doctors had a go with that bit.
