Branson flies in to discuss new Intl airline
Mon "Sydney Morning Herald"
Branson eyes new airline
By Scott Rochfort
April 4, 2005
Sir Richard Branson flew into Sydney yesterday not only to pledge his allegiance to his 25.6 per cent stake in Virgin Blue but to talk up his plans of launching his second Australian carrier this year.
Depending on aircraft availability, the Virgin founder said he hoped to get the international airline off the ground within the next nine months.
Sir Richard said the cost of setting up the airline, which will focus on the US, China and Japan, would be "considerable".
"Whether we look at it with our Virgin Blue hat on or a separate hat on is still to be decided," he said. "My guess is that it will be likely to be separate from Virgin Blue.
"I think there's no shortage of people who would like to come in," Sir Richard added, noting the airline would need to be 51 per cent Australia-owned.
It has been speculated Virgin's main target is the Qantas-dominated - and highly lucrative - Sydney to Los Angeles route.

Agreed, HGW, you have to marvel at the know-it-alls who knock Sir Richard Branson for being a fool, and Brett Godfrey for being the idiot who devised the Virgin Blue business model.

If he chooses the A340 for his International runs he would probably find a whole lot of Jetstar A320 pilots willing to jump across...
Might be one way to affect Jetstar bottom dollar.

G'Day All,
Like him or not he does seem to do rather than speculate.
I believe this one has the ability to affect Oz aviation ( and therefore Qantas) more than virgin blue. Pacific operations has to be his main aim, still a very profitable part of the world.
Watch this space .................

A truly global airline - domestic and international.
Not bad for a bloke being often called a"fool".

all branson legacies! and not to mention my virgin credit card! virgin mobile,
i get the feeling he knows what he is doing...
he will keep his share in VB, not to maintain an operation interest in the company, but just to make the most of his investment now Corrigan is running the show.
and competiton in business is fantastic, when you own the cometition as well.

So will pilots have to BYO endorsement for this company as well, and does that open the door for QF to do likewise???

I would hate to think what the endorsement for a B744 or A340 would cost........I doubt too many would be able to afford their own or even the loan!
It would seem that OZ is leading the way with the BYO endorsement when you look at J*, Virgin and possibly the new RB venture.
I don't think Virgin Atlantic requires you to have the endorsement. I wonder what that says about us Australians.

Back in the good old days, Pilot's who joined an airline expected to stay with that Airline until they retired. They had a good super scheme, a Seniority system and the company paid for “endorsements” The Pilot's felt proud of the company they worked for and “Loyal” to the company, sort of like “Family”
Nowadays, the new generation of “Managers”, only plan to stick around long enough to move on to the next company, leaving their mess for someone else to sort out. All these “Managers” have the same “mantra”, screw the workers and maximize their share options.
Is it any wonder that the Pilot's are now following the same “Mantra”, follow the money and “screw” the Airline.

If I May...
My guess is that yes this carrier WILL get off the ground. They could bring in new 346s from the big order, or use the 343s or 744s they currently have. Based in SYD is my bet... thats where the vst majority of the transpac traffic originates. This route is RIPE for the raping. My money is also on VS crews initially, with DJ crews to follow. Type rating..... ehhhh I doubt they will require BYO as VS doesn't require it... and this is a long haul international carrier we are talking about, not an LCC based on SWA. Perhaps they would offer DJ crews the upgrade IF they buy the rating??? As previously said, the bond would be massive... but hey, this is Australia, anyone could pay! Ya, I know I'm getting ahead of myself... but Branson rarely hypes things up for nothing.
