EASTERN recruiting.

I would like to know if anyone has recently been given a start date or put on active hold with Eastern. How long was it between P & S, interview & sim, and acceptance? I'm still sitting here waiting for the phone to ring after completing P & S on the 11th of February.

Thanks.

Thumbs down

I've heard that all new pilots at Sunstate will also be required to pay $26,000 for their Endorsement and if you fail the sim, check to line etc, to bad look for another job.

Phone calls have been made during the last week to applicants on staffcv, asking them if they are willing to pay $26,000 for a job! Applicants who have had recent interviews were also asked the same question.

Where does it stop, how long before REX, Skywest etc are doing the same?

It is a well known fact that flying jobs are rarer than hens teeth in Oz but you lads have to decline the 'offer' of employment if you pay for a Dash8 rating.

Say yes to that and you guys are screwed. QF mainline will ultimately follow.

'Are you happy to pay for your 747-400 rating? You're a top bloke and we'd be delighted to have you as a valued staff member.. but if you think we are going to invest in you you've got another thing comming!'

Paying for the endorsement is being discussed at the moment, however I think if the company does bring this in than the pilot group will be pushing for a retention bonus or equivalent (Much like Virgin and Jetstar) with the upcoming EBA negotiations

Rumour has it that a number of Jetstar pilots have returned from their A320 endorsements only to give notice and go to greener pastures.

If true, or even if not applicable to Jetstar but any operator it is not too hard to understand why an employer would be tempted to charge for endorsements to discourage this sort of occurrence.

I'm sure many of us have seen Bloggs depart shortly after having big training dollars spent on him/her.

My thoughts: I have worked for the same regional company for quite a few years and enjoy the work. I am now considering whether to move on and get a jet job. My loyalty to my current employer, who has paid for everything since I started is part of the consideration. If I paid my incoming endorsement I would leave without giving them a second thought and without reasonable notice if required as I owe them nothing. They have shown, by making me pay for working for them, that they consider me merely a way to fill a requirement not someone they really want in their company.

And sorry "still looking" I would have thought you would have heard within that time. Why not give them a call and ask the question. As far as I know its only QANTAS who takes two years to skin the proverbial cat.

Anyone know ( Hugh???) if its acceptable to ring Eastern and enquire further?

Back to the original question.

The guy that looks after recruiting has been on leave and will be back next week I think.

Next stage testing days, ie sim and interview, are scheduled for March 2,3, 9, 22, 23. If you get a call for these it could be a very early start as the sim is only available between 3am and 7am in the morning apart from the 23rd.

From that I would think those in on the 2nd or 3rd would already know, but for the later dates you will probably find out next week.

Good luck!

A more equitable (and mutually responsible) means is a bonding arrangement,
So now we are ENDORSING bonds ???

A few years ago, this practice was considered shonky, and people were up in arms about it!

Yes, I agree that companies spend considerable $$$ on training, and YES I agree that they SHOULD expect a return of service. Howver I fail to see WHY should someone be offered employment, having been painted a rosy picture in the interview, only to find that the company treats it's employee's like sh!t. That they can't afford to live on the wage / the aircraft are unsafe and the company culture won't fix it etc etc etc .... only to find that they NOW have to PAY to leave!!!!

REGIONALS have accepted for YEASR that they are only a trasining ground for bigger and better, and they pay accordingly.

Those that HAVE stayed actually get paid quite well, and the company gets a GREAT retrurn of service from them.

To pay an F/O around 38k to fly a DECENT aircraft, whilst living in a capital city, esp MEL or SYD, whilst the company makes millions of dollars evey year should be return enough!.... and lets not even MENTION that these people only get paid the F/O wage AFTER having completed the groundschool and line training WHILST BEING ON A TRAINING WGAE, which is significantly less than F/O wage!!!

YES, we want to work, but YES, they need us to work as well... it is a two way street folks!

I have had a look at the EBA. Is it current? Around $43K a year for an F/O to live in Sydney? With a "cheap" house around what $450K?

Then when rising to the dizzy heights of captain around $75K a year? Is that right?

Now talk of paying for your endorsement? At least with Virgin a $20K investment reaps an $85K a year salary straight away!

Any EAA guys, how do you live in Sydney on that sort of money?

"Just say NO!"

C'mon Lads.......Have the respect for yourselves, your abilities and your families to gracefully decline such a generous offer!!!

Bonds........while they maybe unsavoury.......at least don't kill the careers of those less financially fortunate/prepared for such "opportunities."

As Jarse said,
It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!

Red face start offered

Still lookin'

I completed the testing, sim & interview in that same week & was then offered a start - 21 Feb!

PS For the record - I'm not interested in paying the $20K+ for a turboprop endorsement to then have to live in Sydney (despite it being arguably one of the best cities in the world!).

Shagtastic - RE: "It is a well known fact that flying jobs are rarer than hens teeth in Oz.."

I think I'm up to about offer number 8 at the moment incl turboprop, regional/commuter, RFDS, etc, both here in Oz and overseas. I only gave my notice with my current employer and starting looking 4 weeks ago!

If you're not finding work around at the moment, you're not looking in the right places!

The question is, A31J: Did you accept the offer, and was it conditional on funding your endorsement?

Icarus, we still live very carefully. I'm on 10th year Capt's wage which is just over $80k plus allowances. Mrs. Jarse is still working fulltime too (out of necessity). We live a reasonably comfortable lifestyle now (for SY), and are chipping away at the mortgage....

Things were very different before I got my command, however. We lived almost hand-to-mouth. Such that we had to make a choice between a larger family or buying a house. Reluctantly, we chose to buy a house. So we are a 1 child family and will stay that way.

But no matter which way you look, there's always someone worse off. Look at our FA's....Thirtysomething k$ per year. Now THEY have it tough. At least I don't have to work 2 jobs to keep my head above water.

How's it Hangin'. (To the left). Didn't see any earlies on the roster (well, no earlier than usual). Maybe I missed something? (Looks around frantically for roster)

Bugga! Can't find it anywhere

Red face EAA Offer

HJ,

Much as I would have liked to, complications at our end have meant I turned down the offer of a start.

I think I will frame the letter of offer - it certainly took some getting through all of the hoops, and I'm happy to have done it in a short period of time - and from interstate at that!

There was no mention during the process or during the offer of a start of me paying for the endorsement.

Take care,

A.

PS Ask Grrowler for more info..

A31J, so paying for the endorsement appears to be only a rumour then?

One would have thought that if it had become policy then they would advise that fact on their website, on staffcv and when they are making you jump through the hoops.

Still lookin, et al, if you still haven't heard anything, the recruiting wiz is back in the office tomorrow, it would be worthwhile giving him a call to check the status of your application. I won't post his number, I assume you know who he is, just ask to be connected.

Best of luck.

Oh and Icarus, with great difficulty. Forget about buying a place unless you already have a hefty deposit saved (the same one as for the A320/B737/B717/DH8 endorsement )

Edited to reflect NJS requirements

Just to clarify, those interviewed by Sunstate since late last year have been asked how they feel about paying for their endorsement.

Thanks for the clarification.

How stupid can a question be? I mean how the hell would anyone feel about paying for an endorsement. The answer to such a bull**** proposition would have to be a foregone conclusion.

The dream job that so many aspire to is quickly desolving..... funny that!

I am a dying breed. Well paid, always had my employer pay for my training, and looking forward to a comfy retirement.

It truly is a shame that the same is no longer available to aspiring pilots.

Oh well better get your cheque books out people and sign away.
