Emirates will increase pressure on rivals

Fri "Melbourne Age"

Emirates hops non-stop to Dubai

July 2, 2004

Emirates this morning will increase the pressure on its aviation rivals on the lucrative European route when it begins a new non-stop flight between Melbourne and Dubai, operating the service with its new ultra-long-haul A340-500 aircraft.

The airline expects to win a greater share of the aviation market as it increases the frequency of its services to Australia.

The new non-stop service to Dubai - now offered to both Melbourne and Sydney - means Emirates is likely to increase the challenge to Qantas and British Airways on the long-haul kangaroo route.

Emirates will also begin using the new A340-500 aircraft to fly to the west coast of the US.

Emirates said that by next April it would offer 41 flights a week between Australia and Dubai, of which 27 would fly onward to New Zealand.

The new non-stop service offers a flight time of about 14 hours between Melbourne and Dubai. Emirates also announced that the new non-stop service would continue on to Christchurch. Previously, the airline had only serviced Auckland from Australia.

"The introduction of the new service to Melbourne will play a key role in promoting Melbourne as an international tourist destination and a gateway to Australia," said Emirates' executive vice-president of commercial operations, Ghaith al-Ghaith.

The Treasurer and Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby, launched the new service, saying the increased international flights to Melbourne Airport were having a beneficial impact on tourism in Victoria.

"Since 1999 there has been a 14 per cent increase in the number of international tourists coming to Victoria, compared with a 6 per cent increase for the rest of Australia," he said.

"I'd almost go so far as to call Emirates a Victorian airline - they have become so intertwined with the Victorian community."

The new Emirates A340-500 aircraft features first-class suites - each with their own mini-bar, dining table and built-in vanity table with mirror - which have cost more than $US175,000 ($A250,400) each to install.

Emirates expects to win a greater share of the aviation market as it increases its services to Australia.Emirates has invested more than $US1.8 billion on its new A340-500 fleet.
