Launy radar online

One of the outcomes from the Christmas eve incident in Tassie was the recommendation to enhance situational awareness and traffic alerting especially in non-radar airspace to air transport operations.

The practical outcome of that recommendation was the commissioning of the transportable radar at Launceston.

The Launy radar has been up and running for a week now, but it hardly seems to have been noticed or commented on.

Good news!

Havent been down that way yet. Does the radar coverage extend all over Tassie? Is it operational?

And it isn't transportable anymore (unless you have a jackhammer). Let's hope they don't need another one to patch up another hole in the system

While it may be up and running, if ASA lose a radar head in ML or SY, this portable radar will be gone in less than 24 hrs. Thats why there has been little said about it and procedures adopted have to cover the possibility of no radar.

Understand coverage to the ground at LT, but only to 10,000 at Hobart.

While the radar is there, radar is being used, sequencing (vectoring) and traffic assessment in E etc. I'm not sure whether the Tower TSAD is working yet... But they aren't getting a real display regardless.

I think Dog One is right about the moving it again, but it's more likely 72 hours...

The airspace divide between tower and enroute is still (proc airspace design) i.e. same as TW, HB, AY and AS, enroute own above A085.

Radar over HB is not to bad, about A060 overhead, A050 to NW and A100, it does differ with WX etc.

Rumour mongers have suggested AsA has ordered another portable radar, with no intention of moving Launey.

Coverage to the ground at LT, and genereally 6- 8,000 @ Hb. ***political comment deleted***. Flights such as HB to DPO,WYY SMI etc marginal at 8 most of the way in the crz. Good for tp's out of DPO, on at about 7-8k out of WYY. Not too much chop for the twins along the north coast and out to KII unless quite high, but on a good day macedon gets them as well.

Lt-Fli not bad for half the flight at 6-7k.

As far as standards go, radar is proving very useful. The towers are not radar (Lt has TSAD but is not allowed to use it for sep... picture only display, no interaction) and have to have a procedural standard given to them, but on the other hand it is sometimes easier and less restrictive achieving that standard using radar than it was before we had it.

The real difference is the radar DTI. Enroute controllers have to watch for vfr in E and inform the towers if they think there is going to be an issue for any of the twrs' IFR a/c (what was the coverage at HB again?). We now have hotlines to the towers ( like a hotline to the flow... ding....wait...lol).

Better than it was.

Cheers,

R-S.

PS Chapi, how's the XP?

A little side note to any pilots from Tas who may be reading this, if you want to take advantage of this radar service after your "radar service" has been terminated, keep your code til landing (as per AIP). It\'s been generally pretty good.

Some others may question why they get codes and never seem to get identified. Some of the time you probably are on radar but not consistantly. It\'s no good identifying and terminating services every two minutes, but it\'s better to be positively identified by us some of the time, even if you are not aware of it. If we have a traffic issue it\'ll often mean a better description of the picture being passed by the controller.

R-S.

Maybe it was better without the radar, then?

Nothing like passing VFR traffic at FL115 to a jet departing from a non-radar tower, especially when their airspace only goes to A045. But it is still required to be passed. Great system.

No TSAD

Correction to my last. After having worked the airspace for the past couple of weeks, it turns out through general conversation with the tower that the TSAD in fact does not exist! Lucky the important information gets through to us.

With all due respect to my fellow warriors fighting the biscuit chucker, that radar should be on the ground at Leinster, not at some politically correct Taswegian backwater.
Virgin, have a near-midair over Trippers Thunderbox, will yah??!!
