Media - Pull ya heads in

It is about time you media representatives pulled ya F***** heads in.

We all love to read a good story but when it is made up of half truths, inuendo, expert opinions of passengers and people with half an hour of flying experience its just plain irresponsible.

You are damaging our industry and frankly I think companies such as DJ and QF should start sueing them for defamation when crap like what was on tv this morning is published.

Half truths like "Virgin has had severe restrictions placed on its operation over maint issues....blah blah." Why is it not published that Virgin has been told to revert back to the standard 60 min approval from an airport until its maint RECORDS are brought into line. No one mentions that 60 mins is the normal and ETOPS is an exception to the standard regs. Also the "go around" of QF in BNE reported as "Aircraft near crashes" and expert opinions of some politician and occasional pilot published.

I'm frankly tired of it and put it out to you journos that I know do read this column to have the guts to report things as they are not as they are twisted and bastardised by you prats.

So I open this post and put the challenge out to you to come up on here an be open to to some industry scruteny seeing you wont publish it in your papers.

Me thinks we won't hear a word from them but the challenge has been put forward. Is there an honest journo out there?

Explain yourselves......I and others await your replies.

Tried that via letters to the editor with no luck, they elected to publish a well informed persons letter that said something along the lines of "I was on a plane that took to the air again just before landing and I think in hindsight we might have been in a crash situation....."

Makes you wonder what other crap they publish outside the aviation industry as well.

Outtacontrol,

Me thinks if one were aiming to "pull F***** heads in", one would be better served speaking to the airlines legal eagles as to why they don't sue for defamation or slander!!!

I suspect the reason VB, QF, etc don't do this is for fear of "waking a sleeping giant" when they fall further out of favour with the media!!??

Can anyone from any of the legal/PR dept's of Oz airlines shed any light on this issue?

Some years ago a lage Australian company tried to litigate against the producers of a well knowncurrent affairs program. The crux off the complaint was that during interviews with senior company staff and management, questions were asked and answers given. The footage was taken back to the studio and then the reporters were flimed asking different questions and this was edited in to the given answers. . The result was that the company looked sleazy and evasive. The legal action got nowhere. Given this, perhaps the QF and DJ strategy of "No Comment" is correct. I had to p!ss myself about one news report from several years ago; A Charter light twin had descended below LSALT and crashed, injuring all on board. The pilot walked 1 km to a farm house with a broken arm, or something, to get help. The owner of the charter company told news crews "I'm so proud of that young man. He's a hero. They should give him a medal". Brilliant. GENIUS. The young man was later pilloried by CASA but the hacks got their sound grab and the charter company's switch ran hot with calls from people who wanted to fly with the 'hero'.

outtacontrol me thinks your sentiments are appreciated by all but I personally don't think you will get a reaction as they haven't got the intestinal fortitude.
They hide behind their editor and are a law unto themselves, call themselves professionals - THEY CAN'T EVEN SPELL THE WORD.

The only thing that you are fairly safe in believing from the media is the day and date on the front page and or the promo on the TV with the date on it - but that has never always been correct either.

Prats of the highest order with no credibility, I once had a very valid and serious complaint which I took to the Press Council (their watchdog) at the time I didn't realise that this was like complaining to your Mother in Law about your wife. In this case even the police were pissed about what they had done neither of us got anywhere.

A POX ON THEM ALL - VERMIN AND GUTTER TRASH

Remember when the get rid of Essendon crew were at their most vociferous-
"An aviation enthusiast of long standing saw a B747 and a Cessna (it's always a Cessna 'cause don't know any other names) miss by 300metres over Essendon"
Yeah-standard procedure-standard separation of 1000ft
Well they have to make a headline somehow if there's nothing else to talk about!
Keep up the good work guys!

FarQ2, I gotta say I do agree with you. Journos are all of what you just said. Their favourite punchline is "we have a duty to report to the public" Well their duty is to report things accurately to the public, not a bastardised half version of the truth. I would have to say if I had an incident my comment to them would be the big FarQ2 because whatever you said good or bad would be twisted, turned, deleted, edited into whatever they wanted to make you say.

Why is there no media accountability in this country. It's like they can just get up and defame the reputation of the best companies with no recourse from those companies. When they are forced to publish an apology its in the middle of the classified section in the middle of the paper and the size of a minties wrapper. They should be forced to be accountable for their actions and if they get it wrong they should be forced to publish the apology on the front page of the paper in big bold type. It's about time the government made them accountable for their action

Still waiting for their response.....anyone....anyone....wont hold my breath

Too busy dreaming up another far fetched outtacontrol flying story.

I phoned a newspaper once to ask the progress of an air race. I was told that no-one must have crashed.

The solution is very simple if you don't want to be offended by the media. Don't buy or read newspapers, listen to the radio or watch the TV that you find offensive. If that is too much to bear, only read, watch and listen to what you want. If that becomes offensive, there is always the remote control, off siwtch or the next page. We all know that the media is sometimes irresponsible, just as any other segment of the communuty.

Go slag off at other professionals elsewhere as a lot of what appears above brings credit to no one, and particularly those who are so full of apparent hatred. Come to think of it, many in society don't have high opinions of pilots but yYou could always go and get a job as a journo or even buy a paper or radio or TV station and show the world how it should be done.

End of rant.

Don Esson,

I get the idea you may be one of the said journos. If so thank you for at least responding even with such a lame unconstructive reply.

You are entirely correct in what you say in one part...yes I can turn off the tv if it offends me. It's not the fact that it offends me that is worries me. What annoys me is the public perception portrayed and misrepresentation of an industry that for the most have a professional bunch of people striving to keep it one of the safest in the world. If the journalists of this country actually took the time to find out what really went on, what training and experience pilots, engineers etc have to go through before they get to touch a bright shiny jet, they might be able to publish credible articles.

Finally it is not built up hatred or slagging rather frustration at a bunch of, if you like "professionals", who chose to act unprofessionally and defame an industry and it's "professionals" without justification. I and im sure many others have no intention of becoming journalists and showing them how to do it, we have good jobs of our own. Rather we ask the "professionals" at the newspapers, tv and radio stations to do a bit of research and do their job as responsibly and professionally as we do ours.

Don, if in fact you are a journalist, I challenge you to write or present a factual article in response to something such as the rubbish that has been published in the last few weeks. Have the balls to stand up to the editors and print the facts not crap.

Don, with all due respect, your suggestion about an absolute avoidance of media sorces is impratical. The general public need to be informed about world events and rely upon the skills of jounos to accurately interpret events. It is also recognized that media companies need to sell advertising space and regetably this leads to the situation whereby news is presented in a fashion where it 'entertains' rather than informs. I would imagine that this poses an ethical dilema to the truely professional journalist. It is regretable that news has simply become 'product' and there is commercial presure from editors to present stories in a particular light. During the '80s, I enjoyed reading the Nation REview. I was almost heartbroken when publication ceased. In my view, this was the last example of independant publishing in Australia. These days, I only read stuff from Fairfax, however I used buy the Daily Telly(ie; flog one off the aeroplane) because I can knock the cross-word over in about 10 mins over a cup of coffee. The only TV news I watch is ABC. On the radio it's either Radio Nation or (again) ABC. Anything else is a waste of time. The real beef we have in aviation is that our industry is presented inaccurately as dangerous or not presented at all. Is it an axiom of your industry that avion can only be presented in this way? I suppose it is boring to watch a story on how much time the professional pilot puts into their work. Like many others, I was outraged at the slandering of the professional and safe actions of the QF B737 crew who made a go-around in BNE recently. Sure it would have made an attention grabing begining to the news enticing people to stay tuned just as dinner was being put on the tables around Australia but think of how many sleepless nights and pillow punching the crew of this aircraft subsequently endured as a result. Simply for correctly and safely doing their job. Or do you just not care?

Hello,

It's not a true story that sells newspapers quite the opposite, one with lies gets the public interest... Unfortunately its like that everywhere...

A while ago in the North West a pilot was fulminating to me about some goose who had run out of bang-water and landed on a beach near YMMB. Nobody hurt, no aluminium bent & aircraft flown out the same day; complete non-event. So of course it was the leading story in all media, even on the other side of the country!!! His point was that every crappy aircraft story that hit the news hit his business.

The pilot then wandered off to his aircraft, to return with his eyes crossed, coated in oil, blood & red dust.

"What happened to you?"

"The rivet fell out of my ladder when I was topping up the oil, and I banged my head on the propellor!"

"Well Dino, look on the bright side, at least you'll be on the telly."

Don't think he spoke to me again...

Devil

Now lads, we all need to understand the situation with the various forms of media. They NEED to sell their newspapers and their air-time so that they can make money from all the ads they run. All's fair eh.

All they're doing is whatever is necessary to sell their product. Surely you wouldn't begrudge them the opportunity to do that, regardless of what they HAVE to do to sell their product eh? Can't let the facts get in the way of any story that's likely to increase their profits eh?
