Question What Is The Real Story About The Ex AN B737 With Virgin Blue.

Sorry if this is posted already, I couldn't find it.

On the News they are talking about an ex Ansett B737 that was with Virgin Blue (not now), which was involved in some sort of incident, and was later found to have parts missing.

Does anyone know the REAL story?

Both CZQ + R under went C-Checks in the UK before delivery and then had cabin reconfig's and other mods done by AirNZ. From memory the air stairs were removed in NZ.

Okay, thank you.

So according to Boeing, those 2 aircraft were not airworthy all that time the shrouds were left off.

The person that "authorised" the removal of them, and for the aircraft to operate without them, is he from Ansett, Air NZ or Virgin?

It says in the ATSB report that some CASA approved person authorised the removal of these shrouds, which according to Boeing made the aircraft not airworthy.

I just wondered where this person was from, that's all.

Kap's point, GT-R, is that this provided him with the opportunity to once again raise the '89 subject, as well as to use this forum to denigrate someone who once upset him by "taking one of our jobs"!!
How professional to publicly try to demean the man, with 6000hrs on type, and 21500 total, by blaming him for this and other incidents, without the ability to reply and defend himself. I'm surprised that Woomera has seen fit to let this past, since Kap supplied enough information here for anyone in the industry to recognise the man. I wonder what would happen if I publicly identified Kap here?

On a less personal note, there appears, to me, to be an anomaly in the report. In the paragraph headed - Component Testing, reference is made to "....indications of moisture staining on the outer case, there was no evidence of any residual damage to the unit due to water contamination", yet in the Analysis paragraph, the incident cause is identified as "...permitted the ingress of water to the E/E bay AND THE PRESSURE CONTROLLER, resulting in a malfunction of the operating modes of the unit".
Am I missing something here, are they saying that there was enough water ingress to cause problems without leaving ANY evidence of being there? In the immortal words of a Q'lander, "please explain"!!

Kind regards,

TheNightOwl.

Hindsight?
When the Boeing FCTM refers to an initial descent attitude of 10 degrees nose down, and does not say to wait for one and a half minutes before extending the speedbrakes, hindsight does not come into it. As a Rapid/Emergency Descent it was a stuff-up regardles of who or when or how many hours .

So, let me get this straight...

if this bloke "Spike" is now well into his 70's and left the industry some time ago, but was flying with Virgin in 01'...then he was in his early 70's at the time of the stuffed up high dive?

How could this be?

Kap M - I think LAME was asking about the 2001 VB incident. The report was released on Wednesday - link is http://www.atsb.gov.au/aviation/occu...ail.cfm?ID=483

Kap,

Second line of the first post on this thread. In other words you've flown in to slag off someone you don't like without having the faintest idea what is being discussed here. The aircraft in question wasn't even with Ansett in 1991, and this discusstion is about an incident that happened in 2001 after it had been aquired by VB.

Does this show the awareness and prudence one would expect of a professtional aviator, particularly one who spends a lot of his time critisising many others in his industry?

Funny too that it is usually people on one side of th '89 fence who get singled out for your particular brand of "outing". I seem to remember an incident or two pre that date (like the TAA 737 nearly flying into the hills near TSV). But those incidents were never fully resolved, as it was AFAP policy for its' members not to take part in saftey inquieries!!

I can remember a certain gingerbeer (ansett) getting chewed out for mentioning the incorrect removal of the airstair cover and the non-compliance fitting of the membrane on several A/C in the fleet (those that were fitted). It also high-lighted what can happen when the auto-slat computor gets coffee in it !! It was very interesting having the details punched into the sim (fault entered)and simulating a single sided auto-slat operation. Not a good sight for all bar 1 crew and I tip my hat at him for working it out before making a hole in the ground !!!

Hi Kap,

From BBs link:-

The previous operator had purchased the aircraft from the United Kingdom and it was entered onto the Australian civil register on 3 December 2000. Between December 2000 and January 2001 the aircraft underwent modification and heavy maintenance work at an overseas engineering facility before entering revenue operations in Australia. The modifications included the removal of an airstair from under the forward passenger entry door. During that work the airstair drip pan and the cloth moisture shroud were removed from the E/E bay.
Care to explain how an aircraft purchased by Ansett in December 2000 ( I flew it in it's first week on line) was involved in your 1991 incident?

Now, a pilot who has a bleeding obvious error pointed out to him and STILL argues the toss- I see Japanese CRM is rubbing off on you...

What's a decade among friends?.

The interesting thing I got from this thread is that whilst we all blindly board whatever is dished up in OZ/NZ..what you see and expect is not always what you get.

I clearly remember many years ago whilst visiting the Motherland, we were all walking across the tarmac to board an Ansett flight from Melbourne to Adelaide and Perth. When the head of the family saw a 700 series Viscount, we were all U-turned and goose-stepped back to the terminal to await the DC6-B the next day.

When asked why, it transpired that the old man's good mate and ex-colleague at MMA had a wing fall off one of said a/c and the f....g things were unsafe.

We are always happy to wrap the third world. The reality is, that in the current climate of beanies running airlines, the third world is among us.

The diference being, Traffic, that we are talking about 3 decades here! About 1970 when the wing came of Maccy Millers 700 series Viscount on descent into Port Hedland, if I remember correctly.

I also remember that it occured during my attendance at an AFAP executive meeting in Mel, and a directive to not crew that model was instigated immediately and they never flew in this country again!

Those powers by the pilot body were lost forever from 1989 thanks to the you know who's!

Question

Hey Amos, was it also a Viscount that had the magnesium gearbox and crashed at Winton (wing also fell off due to the gearbox fire)?

Kap,

I'll take the deletion of your posts as an admission of error (nearest I'll get I imagine.)

I take it you have backed away from you derision of the crew in the incident on (finally) understanding you were slagging off a Virgin Blue pilot (and probably bretheren '89er) not a post '89 AN guy?
