Got an email today to say I was successful in the online testing and the next telephone interviews are scheduled for December 2010 / January 2011, followed by an Assessment Day in Melbourne at any of a number of dates in 2011.
WOOOHOOOO same same~!!!

str8shooter 6th October 2010 00:03

TranceX2, Kieran17 and others:
Yep, got the same positive email...., it was sent late yesterday, although I only got to open it today. Yeeehaaa.., happy days (so far)! :ok:

Thanks as well to rossco47 for the heads-up on what to expect down the track...., very helpful.

Congrats..., and good luck to all!!! :)

My experinces

Hey all, I'm coming a bit late to the party, but I too applied for the enroute job (waaaay back in November last year, so it's been a looooong wait :p). I completed the online testing on the saturday, can't remember the date, and received a phone call on the Wednesday for the short phone interview.

In the testing, I was mainly concerned with the verbal one, just as I found myself wrestling with logic to get the right answer. I did ok in the practise test so hopefully I did well in the actual test :) the others were ok, just then checking test got progressively harder and less time, but I think it was designed that way, to see at what point people "fail" as such.

I'm booked in on the 20th at the Brisbane centre, really looking forward to it :) I had the opportunity to visit the enroute centre in Brisbane and it increased my enthusiasm for the job considerably :D

To be honest, I haven't heard specifically, but I was given the impression that there wasn't a different course for enroute melbourne and enroute Brisbane, that the paths would diverge after the 12 months in Melbourne, and the city specific training would be the 6 months probation as such. As I said, I have no hard evidence of that, it was just the impression I was given :)

Good luck to all who have applied, and hopefully see you in Melbourne sometime soon ;)

dreamer84 11th October 2010 01:26

Just got notification of my pass of on-line testing; still waiting on phone interview though. Any tips on the interview? Anything in particular I should be researching? And do they give you a number you can call back if you miss the call? I'm a bit paranoid about missing it if I'm working or something!

Thanks in advance.

Great Success

TroyMcClure 11th October 2010 12:50

Hi guys, good to discover this site. Just a question , I made it through online testing and awaiting further testing but i'm just wondering if there is any age restrictions. Haven't found any on ASA site. I'm early 40s and fairly fit but now wondering if this could go against me. Thanks in advance.

Blockla 11th October 2010 16:01

Troy (I remember you), like any other employer ASA can't discriminate based on age... There have been quite a few 40+ controllers go through in the past. The hardest part for you will be accepting the pitiful training wage.... Very very tough I'd suggest if you are trying to run a household (of any description, unless you're independently wealthy) while training. Then there is the issue of the round 50% pass mark... It's a big risk if you are giving up something else which pays the bills IMHO, good luck though.

stupidthursday 11th October 2010 20:21

dreamer84, you don't have to worry about missing the call. they will send you an email with a link, and you yourself will book the date and time that's most comfortable for you. as for the questions, all of them are situational so try to recall as much as you can from previous experiences. ;) have you heard of STAR? that's how the interview would go.

and as for troy, don't worry about the age buddy. no discrimination whatsoever as long as you can prove you can do the job. and yes that's right, money isn't that good while training if you've got bills to pay.

i am booked for tomorrow's test day in tullamarine. looking forward to it. (not the 1 hour trip though) i wonder how the other's did on the 11th and today? any news guys?

str8shooter 12th October 2010 00:03

[QUOTE: I'm early 40s and fairly fit but now wondering if this could go against me.]

Hey Troy, I'm on the wrong side of 50 (only just), physically & mentally fit, got through the online testing and waiting to be contacted re the phone interview. I'd like to think if we've got the mental stamina and passion for the job, we're in with as good a chance as any?
The others are right though, the initial financial sacrafice will be a bitter pill to swallow, but in my case, I want this opportunity badly enough to do it. Older maybe....., but by no means over-the-hill......, go for it!! :ok:

fivel 12th October 2010 05:44

In regards to the age issue.
Keep in mind, as well as the pay, that the training is not a fast process. From the time I had my test day till the time im (hopefully) fully rated will be about 2 years.

TUF250 12th October 2010 06:51

has anyone been through the melbourne assessment day this week? if so how did you go with it all?

TroyMcClure 12th October 2010 11:26

Blockla, thursday and str8shooter thanks for your replies. Yeah training wage not great but finally feel i'm in a position financially where I can finally have a crack. Been wanting to try this for years. Yes there's a good chance i could fail either test, training, fiield but no point dying wondering and regretting never taking the risk in the first place.

Cheers and good luck.

Enroute training is the same for both Brisbane and Melbourne - once you pass your initial 44 weeks you then go to whichever of those centres houses the zone you are assigned to ... you then spend the next however long it takes you (usually 3-4 months I gather) getting your first endorsement in the zone - once you have that you are an actual ATCO (and that is also when your training bond kicks in)

The tower and the enroute intakes can start together but they split up fairly early on in the piece - I think I remember someone suggesting around week 9 or 12 ish ...

In any case good luck :)

fivel 14th October 2010 09:42

44 weeks..... ha!

cant believe they are still telling new comers that.
would take that with a kfc amount of salt

I think what fivel was trying to say was that we are 34 weeks into our '44 weeks', with between 28 weeks (best case) and 39 weeks (worse case) to go. We did however start in limbo with a redesign, and courses from January onwards will probably be much closer to the initial 44 weeks. Just don't be too surprised by extentions

fivel 14th October 2010 22:48

thanks mikethepomme
I do get carried away sometimes.

Should've gone with TWR/TMA fivel ;)

Received our postings today!

As the Jan and March TWR/TMA course completion dates are so close together, we've been classed as one group of 8 as far as postings go. They are:

2 x Jandakot
2 x Cairns
1 x Melbourne
1 x Moorabin
1 x Bankstown
1 x Parafield

Jan course finished Procedural TWR this week and we'll be starting our last module (formerly GAAP) on Mon. There was a little uncertainty as to what this entailed, at first, as GAAP has now changed to Class D (as is Procedural TWR which we've just completed) and we're the first abinitio group to deal with this change.
All has been resolved, however, with the GAAP component being renamed "Urban D with Parallel Runways", enabling a tick to be placed in a box, so everyone is happy.
On track to finish up at the Academy early December.

Awol57 15th October 2010 14:37

Woohoo my replacement at JT. Lucky fellas (or gals)! Tower is the only way to go :ok::E

Awol57 16th October 2010 05:07

DNS just remember it is safer and more efficient now.

Why make one transmission when six will do!

Rolloffthetop 17th October 2010 06:08

Awol,

So they are releasing you back to Perth hey? You must be stoked!

I take it the conversion boys are coming along nicely at JT?

Awol57 17th October 2010 08:17

No I am off to sunny YPKA. After that maybe back to YPJT. Though I suppose with the way things go I could be off to PH TWR again. One is coming up to final checks, the other just started his training.

Dizzy Llama 17th October 2010 08:25

bwah ha ha!!

or maybe Tops. :oh:

ponti6 17th October 2010 08:42

one would have thought that TOPS would have been renamed by now so it could be scrubbed from the memory of ASA and the new recruits could be sent to a nice new group called.... Northern Lights.... or something similar...

Awol57 17th October 2010 15:05

Lot of training required to get me into a centre, I am one of those tower streamed blokes :ok:

Cookie7 17th October 2010 23:16

Awol,

If you had your time again, would you have chosen twr or gone for enr training?

Awol57 17th October 2010 23:46

Tower for sure. Enjoy the view out the window :):ok:

Plus you are able to move about the country side a bit (assuming you can actually be released to another position)

cbradio 18th October 2010 08:37

I think you'll find cross training the tower stream to take up positions in the centres is becoming very possible (if not compulsory!!)

mmhbtower 18th October 2010 11:07

cb if they send me to a centre it will be VR thankyou very much

AWOL good luck getting out of PKA

5miles 18th October 2010 11:39

Tower is the only way to go
Agree.
Twr is a good first career move. Then after many years and cross stream training, you'll finally become a controller. :E

Nautilus Blue 18th October 2010 13:00

Urban D with parallel runways.
I think they were on RAGE last weekend, or was that AFNAG (aerodromes formerly known as GAAP).

j_850 19th October 2010 06:24

Any new applicants been through the Assessment day yet? I'm scheduled later this week. Any thoughts?

Cookie7 19th October 2010 09:36

Airservices Australia is currently recruiting for 2011 training courses. We are actively seeking to recruit previously trained and rated Air Traffic Controllers.

Airservices Australia employs controllers in 26 towers and enroute centres in Brisbane and Melbourne.

We are primarily seeking applications for our TMA stream, however applications for Tower and en-route will also be considered. Locations we are currently hiring for include:

· Cairns

· Perth

· Brisbane

· Sydney

. Adelaide

So that was an excerpt from a recent advert on seek.com.au as AsA seek previously trained and rated controllers.

So, who has applied? :suspect:

Plazbot 19th October 2010 10:10

LOL. As if. Seems the new rostering norm is 4.5 hours between shifts. You can stick that buttercup.

Fatty182 20th October 2010 21:43

Who was the controller who came down to visit us new recruits in Briabane yesterday (Wednesday) at about 3.20? I for one appreciated the chat and information about the job, the academy, etc :)

TUF250 21st October 2010 03:07

To applicants who completed the October 2010 testing in Melbourne.

Has anyone heard back from ASA yet?

lamancha73 21st October 2010 05:06

Nothing yet, TUF250. Maybe they're waiting till they have completd the Brisbane assessments??

TUF250 21st October 2010 05:42

That was my guess but it is nice to hear that there are others in the same boat. Keep us posted if you hear anything. Cheers

rossco47 21st October 2010 13:21

Has anyone heard back from ASA yet?
Gemma suggested probably the first week of November.

Fatty182 22nd October 2010 10:31

Yeah, I did my assessment in Brisbane on Wednesday, and we were told they would get back to us within 2 to 3 weeks (ie by mid-November), especially given the Jan 4 starting date of the first course!

TheMadDog 24th October 2010 23:37

Just a general question regarding daily finish times for the theory component of the course training for those of you currently at the college......

Assuming your finish time is 4pm, would you generally always finish right on 4pm? Do you often finish earlier or later even?

Just curious as to how it runs when it comes to sorting out childcare.

Thanks guys.
