TUF250 5th November 2010 05:13

I know this is probably a hard question to answer but in ASA history, do they tend to make offers to those who have had successful referee checks or do they check everyone and make a short list from there?

regards.

Toboto 5th November 2010 09:04

And don't burn any old bridges either..

Captain Homer 5th November 2010 12:49

always have a backup plan

i concur, maybe even take long service or leave without pay for 12mths, no sure thing in this game.
but give it all you've got and try and be one of the few that get through....

stupidthursday 7th November 2010 19:18

Hey TUF, where did you go for the assessment, melb or brissy? Just curious. :O

TUF250 7th November 2010 21:59

in melbourne mate. what about yourself? have you heard anything more?

stupidthursday 8th November 2010 01:51

I did mine in melb as well. No i haven't heard anything yet. But like what they said, referees wouldn't be contacted if you didn't pass the assessment. I guess we just have to hang on a little bit longer.

Fatty182 8th November 2010 05:19

At least your references have been contacted, mine haven't been yet :P But maybe they are doing Melbourne people first since your assessment days were like 3-4 weeks ago, Brisbane's first assessment day was only 3 weeks ago this Wednesday. That's what I'm hoping at least :P Congratulations tho! Hopefully I'll be joining you soon enough :)

Something ATC 8th November 2010 06:25

Hi all,

One of mine was contacted last week. Havent heard anything since though. The waiting is a killer.

Good luck to all

Fatty182 12th November 2010 01:13

The waiting is killing meeeeeeeee..... Still haven't had my references contacted either....

fivel 12th November 2010 12:45

Get use to the waiting
But don't worry too much Fatty, they sort everything out very strangely. Unless you have heard that you're definately out, you're still in the running. If they had scratched your name you would know.

Just make sure guys and girls it's what you want. Cause it's not a quick path and there's a lot of !!!!/obstacles along the way(that have nothing to do with the job). Thankfully (especially after plugging into the real world recently) it is worth it. I can tell you right now before you start confidence and attitude is the key. (Im sure even my good buddy enemyMig would agree)

rossco47 12th November 2010 23:17

Totally agree, however...

If they had scratched your name you would know.
Past experience is now suggesting I start to be concerned. I realise no-one has actually been advised either way yet, but, last time around the rejection emails came out about three weeks after the testing day - but what made it worse is that the successful ones were already doing the next steps of the process by then.

Believe me I'm far from a doomsday type of person, but if referees haven't been contacted by now you have to be concerned.

I'm now *so* hoping they have an even stranger system than before and that I'm wrong...

5miles 14th November 2010 04:59

new requirement to rapidly increase the training throughput....
That's what management want.

this will take time.
That's the reality.

TUF250 14th November 2010 07:46

I take it that still no one has heard yes or no yet?

I'm wondering if its worth sending off an email enquiring as us 'melbourne' people were told we would here in the first week of November.

enemyMiG 14th November 2010 09:05

Some good advice above, even from fivel.

There will be times that your confidence takes a battering. Be prepared to pick yourself up and continue to hack away.

Mixed results from emailing AsA, try if you want, but don't expect a definitive answer. Remember "no news is good news".

Kinda makes it hard to make plans though...

Fatty182 14th November 2010 23:44

Ah ok, good to see Melbourne people haven't even heard and you were told you'd hear weeks ago (well, good for us Brisbane people sweating at least :P)

I've considered emailing ASA, but figured it would be pointless too, but the missus is getting annoyed again, and at least emailing them and getting a "we're still working on it" response counts as me doing something :P They're gonna have to at least let some people know soon tho, given a course starts Jan 4! I imagine at this stage tho, the first course will be filled with Melbourne based people who won't have the moving drama, but they'll still need to give notice at their current jobs....

dreamer84 16th November 2010 01:06

Hi guys,

Apologies for repeating anyone here and asking something no one may be able to answer! But I'll try anyway;

I'm expecting a phone interview in Dec/Jan. If that goes well I assume it means travelling to MEL for testing. Does anyone have any reasonable idea when I could expect the training course to begin? ie leaving current employment and moving interstate. Not counting on me getting in but the more idea I have about things the better!

Thanks.

rossco47 16th November 2010 07:37

As a guide (but always subject to change):-

The current round are, in theory, going to fill the January, February and April courses. On that basis (and assuming no overflow from this round) one could guess the next round would be to fill courses from mid May onwards.

I would assume testing would be in MEL and BNE as it was last time.

This would of course be subject to any number of possible changes.

The GM of HR has just been awarded permanent gardening leave. Whatever this means for training/recruitment, and consequently timelines for future/planned courses is anyones guess.
Could that be the first thing to start influencing the timetable? Time will tell.

stupidthursday 16th November 2010 08:37

permanent gardening leave? will it have a big impact on the recruitment?

max1 16th November 2010 10:48

will it have a big impact on the recruitment?
Hasn't for the last 7 years, so far.

To all those out there waiting to get in, there has been a lot of office politics for years. It is bad that this has affected you all. The actual ATC side has not had a lot of input into who is actually selected for a loooong time.

This has changed in the last few months, and about time. Actual ATCs have been included, in a positive way, in the testing. The people I know who have been a part of the testing phase are experienced ATCs, and seem (unusually) confident that they are now involved in selecting people who show an aptitude for doing ATC.

If you are selected, best of luck, work hard and you'll get there. If you don't know something or don't understand something, ask.
In Aviation in general,be it ATC, pilots, engineers, etc, we have the most finely sensitised BS detectors. We know when you don't know, come clean and we can help.

Hello All,
FYi went to the Brisbane Testing days, my references were contacted today

stupidthursday 17th November 2010 04:11

Wooooohoooooo!!! :ok:

Times are good! I made it through. Watch your mobile phones guys. It could be any time.

Fatty182 17th November 2010 10:19

Congratulations stupidthursday :) fingers crossed for the rest of us! So they actually called you? What did they say, did they give you a course date, etc? Basically more details please :p

stupidthursday 17th November 2010 17:38

Thanks. I'm hoping everyone here gets the same call. Basically, she informed me that everything went well with the assessment and that I was selected. The next step would be getting an ARN from CASA then take medical examination.

For those who are still waiting, the start date has been moved to either last week of january or third week of feb. I think it depends on how they go with the simulator's scheduling. I don't really have the details on that one.

I'm still in a bit of a shock really. Good luck guys!

Fatty182 17th November 2010 20:49

Thanks for the info mate :) I'm not surprised about the moved starting date, they were starting to cut it a little fine! Fingers crossed for the rest of us still!

I'm waiting on assessment in Dec/Jan. Does this mean this has been put back?

I've tried to be patient with this but seriously i first applied in January!! Think I did pretty good in online test so no sure why i didn't get an assessment gig in October.

Dragonrage 18th November 2010 13:46

Hmmm, anyone else received their offer yet? Had reference check done as well, but the waiting is killing. Is it bad news someone has got an offer and those who had reference checked still haven't heard back?

TroyMcClure: ASA did say they're working off an order of merit from the online test. I guess you did well, but others did better.

rossco47 18th November 2010 22:27

First and foremost, congrats to stupidthursday - we are all green with envy.:D

We all did - actually, I applied in October 2009. This is still quicker than the first time I tried.

Well, to put it bluntly - at least 120 did better.

Not sure why the waiting is a problem. Unless your referees are going to say bad things about you - you are in.

Most of us have heard nothing.

stupidthursday 18th November 2010 23:28

Thanks again guys. About the waiting, i'm pretty sure that if you haven't received anything that says you're out, i believe you're still in the race, pretty much. I haven't heard anything again about the medical exam so like you guys, i'm still waiting as well.

Good luck to all!

rossco47 19th November 2010 00:02

The waiting is finally over - I've just received my rejection email :{
Oh well it just has to wait another twelve months...

I haven't heard anything again about the medical exam
I think it might be just a case of finding a local DAME and getting it done. It takes a little time but isn't difficult.

ATC_intrain 19th November 2010 00:21

Hi,
Like all of above I have also received a email passing the written exam and have booked a phone interview. Question... what do they ask on the phone interview.
Was reading that we can arrange a ATC visit. Any ideas...
and Congrats to those who have made it.... those waiting best of luck:ok:

lamancha73 19th November 2010 00:39

Also have received the rejection email. Was expecting it since the referees weren't contacted.
Pretty generic response so I'll be requesting for some more feedback. I thought I did OK on the day, but... obviously not. The cynic in me is wondering if its an "age" thing.

Congrats & good luck to those who made it. I hope all of you will be successful.:ok:

rossco47 19th November 2010 00:56

Also have received the rejection email. Was expecting it since the referees weren't contacted.
That was my clue as well!

Do so - Gemma rang me within 10 minutes of asking for feedback. To her credit she did - warts and all.

I thought I did OK on the day, but... obviously not. The cynic in me is wondering if its an "age" thing.
Definitely not - she was very quick to reject the idea (not to mention it's illegal anyway). 37 certainly not a problem, I brought up the subject with her as I'm 49.

Mac7643193 19th November 2010 02:12

Course

Max

Can you give me an idea of just how tough and ruthless the course is. My referees have been contacted so it looks positive and now just want to know what I am in for, for the duration of the course!

Cheers

lamancha73 19th November 2010 06:05

So Rossco, I take it you'll be applying again?
Got my additional feedback. All positive except for one thing - the simulation. Funny, as I thought that I did that pretty well. C'est la vie.

stupidthursday 20th November 2010 01:27

Hey guys. Just to let you in a little secret, this is the second time I applied. The first time, I didn't even pass the online test... I don't know what happened with the first time but luckily I got through the second time. I was a bit worried because this is the last time I could apply for the course.

So to all who received rejection mails, just bear in mind, there's always a next time. That didn't stop me from aspiring to become an ATC. Good luck guys.

ATC_intrain 22nd November 2010 13:59

Congrats, stupidthursday...... just curious to know... when did you apply .... and when is your training happening....... also foe those whose assesment are due to be held in jan and feb ... what are the chances of going to atc training... jusst curious... want to know when to resign from my current job... or maybe not....

le Pingouin 22nd November 2010 15:35

ATC_intrain, I think the moral of the story is don't count your chickens. We're assured there are plenty of applicants for training so on a purely statistical pluck it out of your @rse assessment for an "off the street" applicant it is well less than 10%. I stand to be well & truly corrected.

The fact you're here implies an interest so probably raises your chances, or you're a desperate wannabe ;) From personal observation those who fall into ATC by chance (so to speak) fare better than the those who really really want to do it. It's been a long time since I was directly involved with recruitment so weight my words accordingly.

stupidthursday 22nd November 2010 23:21

Thanks ATC_intrain! I applied last december 09. There is no definite date as of today on when the training starts. I'm hoping by december they could give one.

I don't think you should quit until you have the letter of offer, passed the medical exams, and have a definite date of the training. It's too risky mate.

I still haven't given my 2 weeks notice. Although :Othey have an idea.

ATC_intrain 23rd November 2010 00:34

hey trancex.. have you got your call yet.. or have you booked one.... let me knw what happens......looks like this time they are hiring for 2011 jan feb or april batch....
Also if there is anyone who can tell what to expect in the phone interview......

ATC_intrain 23rd November 2010 01:00

Thanks for your reply.... stupidthursday and le~~~~......ATC_intrain,
Also please explain();
