Help with a distance time question

Can anyone tell me whether I'm right or wrong with this question?

2 aircraft are heading in the same direction
the cruising speed of aircraft 1 is 460 knts
the distance between aircraft is 35 nm
the 2nd aircraft passes after 21 minutes
what is the speed of the 2nd aircraft?

My solution is the difference in speed of the aircraft (v) = d/t

So v = 35 / 21 minutes
21 minutes is 7 20ths of an hour so
v = 35 / (7/20) or 35 x (20/7)
so v = 100knts

If aircraft 1 is doing 460knts and is passed by aircraft 2 and there is a speed difference of 100 knts then the speed of aircraft 2 must be 560knts

The answer given is 360knts. Ie they say aircraft 2 is 100 knots slower
How can this be if aircraft 2 passes aircraft 1 and they are heading in the same direction?

Hope I can get one day in May as well, I can not wait to do stage 2!!!

Thanks!

Kirt:
Hahaha ;) I would if I could!! I still have the email that has the link to schedule an interview, but since I received it, there have never been any more dates shown to select! I just had a quick check now and nothing shows still. I think I will email them and just check to see if there are any available dates still in case I didn't receive them....
The email you got about having just one date to select sounds an awful lot like the one I received! I wonder if we were together at stage 2? Were there about 10 people in your group that day, just one girl and the rest boys? And we had that guy who's currently training now talking to us over lunch about the training programme etc?

Aircraft 1 passes over a checkpoint.

Aircraft 2 passes over same checkpoint 21 min later.

You dont have to add/substract anything. 100 knots is the AC-2 speed.

boeingairbus1981 9th January 2011 20:48

Cheers for the input shadow. Sorry the question is meant to say that aircraft 2 passes aircraft 1 after 21 minutes (no checkpoint)

what is the speed of the 2nd aircraft?

First we need to work out their relative speed, then obviously add that to the speed of AC-1 which must be travelling faster to 'overtake' AC-1

So you're looking at (35/21)*60 for your nm/h
= 100

so then it's simply 100 + 460 = AC=2 with Cruise Speed of 560.

The only way the "given answer" of 360 can be correct, is if the question does not say "the 2nd aircraft passes after 21 minutes" but instead "the 2nd aircraft is passed after 21 minutes".

Is anybody on here on the aerodrome course 227 starting 4th april 2011?

hatemyjob 10th January 2011 14:58

I have my stage 3 coming up and I've noticed the majority of people on here who seem to be getting through are rather young. I'm in my early 30's. Is this a disadvantage as I'm assuming nats want value for money when expenditure on training is so high.

KirtjE 11th January 2011 11:37

SALH: I don't think so, I was spoke to at lunch by a gentleman called Gary who was the Watch Manager at Swanwick.

Electric-chick 11th January 2011 14:06

Hi I am 38 years old married with a house and a young son. I am thinking of applying yo NATS myslf for a change of career (MoD contracts are not as good as they used to be) and to support my family. I have been in aviation for the last 15 years which gives me some experience but I am also worried that 20 plus years of emplyment still in me will not be enough. Good luck to you and hope you pass.

Felix Saddler 11th January 2011 15:52

Hi,

Does anybody know what the pass mark for the initial online check test is? I just completed it and feel as though I "balls'd" it up.
Will I still be invited to assessment if I have?

FS.

Crazy Voyager 11th January 2011 16:27

@Electric-chick
Hello, I read your post earlier, the best of luck to you no matter what decision you make!

@Felix
As far as I know, nobody has failed the inital online test.

Felix Saddler 11th January 2011 16:47

CV,

Many thanks, hopefully I won't be the first!

JayZeus 12th January 2011 12:17

Hi guys,

Complete newb here. Just completed the initial online application form for NATS now waiting to hear back to see if i get invited to stage 1.

By no stretch of the imagination am i an aviation anorak so lots of reading, studying and brain training to do but hopefully all goes well.

First point of action read through this whole thread!!

Crazy Voyager 12th January 2011 13:08

Don't start from the beginning though, the training process was remade a few years ago so the first hundred-odd pages of posts are not very relevant anymore (yep I've read them all :p).

I'm not sure where they remade the process but if you start by reading the last 100 pages of the thread you're probably off to a good start :ok:

sambatc 13th January 2011 14:50

can someone who's recently done Stage 2 confirm whether you have to do cubes again?

here's hoping it's a no.... :E

sambatc: You'll be relieved to know that the cubes do not feature after Stage 1. You will be put through a series of interesting computer-based tests though, make sure your brain is on top form, because they do need serious multi-tasking skills..!

sambatc 14th January 2011 12:05

kirtjE - thank you, thank you thank you... :D :ok:

There are cubes at stage 2

unrealdream 14th January 2011 19:45

Indeed, 3 weeks to go now. Anyone else than me and sambatc going down for stage 2 on the 26th?
I'll be there :) Had a few weeks off the forum courtesy of a multitude of uni work. Looking forward to the stage though! I've found some great games that really stretch the multi-tasking ability!

tonycrfc1 14th January 2011 19:55

Hi guys,

Applied yesterday and got word back todaythat i was successful.

I done the online test today withe numbers and letters, whats the next stage after that??

cheers

Crazy Voyager 14th January 2011 20:05

Have any games to share unrealdream? Will you be coming down the day before or on the same morning? I'm staying in the premier inn again myself.

I'm using www.lumosity.com , some really nice games there and if they won't help me in stage 2 I'll at least had some fun with them :ok:

@tonycrfc1
You'll get to book stage 1 via mail, you'll recive more instructions after that but study the motivational paper and get a good nights sleep and you'll be fine.

unrealdream 14th January 2011 20:16

Air Traffic Control Game - Airport Madness 2
Airport Madness 3
Play Radar Air Traffic Controller, a free online game on Kongregate

All designed by bigfatsimulations (who used to be an air traffic controller himself) and they are pretty intense. I have the full versions which you can buy via the first link, but two free 'samples' are below that. The first link is the most realistic and takes some time to get used to.

I'm planning to stay somewhere nearby again, but not sure where, left it a bit late thanks to being busy and the premier inn is now booked up! :ugh:Going to have a phone around tomorrow.

Crazy Voyager 14th January 2011 20:44

Ah those games, I've tried them out but maybe I should by the full versions...

Well I'll be at the Premier Inn so feel free to send me a PM if you want and perhaps we can meet up for dinner the night before or arrange to go there together in the morning (somehow a bit of company always seem to help calm the nerves :)).

KirtjE 15th January 2011 08:55

sambatc / hatemyjob

Actually... I think there might have been cubes at Stage 2...

In fact, now you mention it, I'm 99% sure there were.

Sorry to have got your hopes up! Haha!

tonycrfc1 15th January 2011 10:13

cheers crazy,

where can i find the motivational paper? or im i best just waiting till they email me.

Crazy Voyager 15th January 2011 11:45

It will be mailed to you, it might be online somewhere but I don't know where so it's a lot easier to just wait for the mail

unrealdream 15th January 2011 14:25

Found a place to stay :) Couple of miles down the road, but still in Fareham. Will drop you a pm at some point this week! :)

Crazy Voyager 15th January 2011 14:31

Sounds good, you know where to find me ;)

sambatc 15th January 2011 14:37

balls! :ugh:

unrealdream 15th January 2011 15:17

Cubes aren't great, but we passed them the first time, so how much worse can they be? :S

They'll also be a nice warm up to the computer tests ;)

PhiltheReaper 15th January 2011 15:41

Don't speak to soon unrealdream! Certainly as far as I remember, the cubes got much harder at the end of the test, for 2 reasons.

1. It's a long a mentally tiring test.
2. the cube nets became less "usual" in their layout, and sides became more and more similar.

I presume that this Stage 2 Cubes test, will be harder through a mixture of both of these factors working against us! - Lets hope we all beast it, and can feel confident and comfortable in ourselves as we go onto the computer tests! I get the feeling feeling confident is going to be a real must for myself in these tests, as many people before seem to believe they have done badly and then passed. Maybe it's not so bad if we just relax and do our best?

Phil

tonycrfc1 15th January 2011 18:36

what type of tests does stage 1 constist of?

whats it like?

unrealdream 15th January 2011 21:14

My post was typed with a little bit of underlying dread!

Ah well, there is nothing we can do other than practise :) For one I wasn't expecting cubes to come up again, so I'm quite glad for the heads up!

Rokkala 16th January 2011 20:19

Quick question. If you failed at any stage, do you need to wait a year from when you fail that stage, or is it a year from when you had your initial application accepted?

For example, you have your stage 1 tests 8 months after applying. If you failed, would you then need to wait another full year from that point, or only another 4 months before sitting it again?

Thanks

PhiltheReaper 16th January 2011 23:30

My understanding is that you have to reply a year after your Stage 1 day? - Any clarification from someone "in the know" ?

Phil

KirtjE 17th January 2011 10:43

I asked this question when I completed my Stage 2 (I obviously wasn't confident! Ha)

If you fail at any point BEFORE Stage 3, you have to wait one year from the date of your Stage 1 tests.

If you fail at Stage 3, you have to wait one year from the date of your Stage 3 tests before you can start at the beginning again.

Basically, the point is, if you fail Stage 3 it's because they didn't like your team work skills or they didn't like you in the individual interview, which isn't going to change if you wait a few weeks... lol
