https://www.propertyfinder.ae/ is a good tool to use for checking property prices in the UAE.

Rents have been reducing and continue to do so. Expect to pay anything from 100K - 150K for a two bedroom apartment in a decent location in Dubai. Popular areas for ex-pats living in flats are the Marina, Downtown or Sheikh Zayed Road (both sides) between the World Trade Center and Dubai Mall.

Hope this helps.

The 52,000AED quoted is perhaps little low. DXB Tower and Approach are closer to circa 40,000AED/month (+/- depending on experience) not including housing allowance. Housing is either paid annually in a lump sum (Serco) or monthly (DANS) and equates to 210,000AED per year. DANS contracts pay higher annual travel allowances (business class to point of hire rather than Economy for Serco).

Schooling allowance is 60,000 per child for Serco but a little more for DANS. I think it's 2 children with Serco or 3 for DANS. Schooling allowances haven't been increased for many years and are now well below what's needed - especially if you have multiple children. Expect to pay considerably out of your own pocket the older they get.

There are pros and cons that are not number related as to which contract is better, but that's personal choice.

Turnover of staff has increased over the last couple of years for a number of reasons, which I won't go in to, but significantly there are opportunities now in other countries that weren't there before and some have chosen to take them. ATCOs leaving, particularly from Approach, is much higher than average with more to go before the end of the year. But it's not just Dubai that are hurting, there are shortages everywhere. The problem is finding the solutions to retaining and attracting quality ATCOs - and that can only be with better incentives, money being the most effective.

It really depends on what you used to and what you are looking for. Keep in mind that a 2/3 bedrooms appartment along the coast ( you need at least one extra room for family or friends visiting) is the same price as a villa located 20min away from the shore.

Appartment in JBR/Marina/jumeriah are great if you’re looking for some fun ( time out, beach activities, restaurant, party’s,...) but they can be pretty noisy up to 3am. Very nice view on the sea, almost every appartment comes with a pool and gym to share. Budget will be around 3000/3500 € per month.

Villa are about the same price but with more space, located in a more relax environment. Pool, tennis, gym, playroom for kids,...

Abu Dhabi 2018

Hi sorry for jumping on the band wagon but I was wondering if anyone had any specific information on what Abu Dhabi is like now? I don't really want hearsay but if anyone has any direct information on pay and conditions as they are this year? As I know they weren't the best last year.
Thanks in advance

Hi Vlad the Impaler, unfortunately I can not seem to find how I can send you a PM. Could it have been disabled by admin maybe?
As I don't have your email, would you mind sending me an email to this address? [email protected]
Many thanks.

Hi I know last year in Abu the pay was 45000 AED That was including your accommodation allowance but I'm not sure if that included schooling allowance.
i know they were talking about getting a pay rise but I don't know if they actually got one. I believe DXB pay slightly more, but then again you are shifting a lot more traffic.

CEP, what is so bad at Abu Dhabi? No one seems to be clear in what is so bad there? Thanks

atco1985 21st Aug 2018 04:59

Hi,
Could you tell me how many hours per week do you work in Dubai? Is roster 6days of work and 4 days off?
Is the atmosphere at DXB TWR really so bad?

Red Dragon 7th Sep 2018 11:21

laxout,

See my previous post for most of the answers to your questions.

Travel is economy class with Serco - two tickets to point of hire a year.

Working cycle is 10 days - generally MMAANNSOOO. Annual leave is 34 working days.

As for negotiation, maybe, but usually you go in at bottom of scale. Pay scales are not published or visible to the employees.

Hey Red Dagon,

Thanks for replying to my thread.

Could you please explain the 10 day work schedule? Am I reading it correctly?
Morning Shift, Morning Shift, Afternoon Shift Afternoon Shift, Night Shift, Night Shift, Overnight Shift, Day Off x3

For annual leave, is it earned a little every paycheck or do I have to wait a year before I get allotted the 34 days off.

Also, if you don't mind, I would like to ask you a few more questions. Please send me an email [email protected]

Thanks in advance! :)

Apc

Hello laxout.
I was wondering how did the Apc go ? Did you pass? Did they give you an offer ?
thanks for your response.

Hi guys,
Just had an telephone interview with GAL, they are looking for ATCO, and asking me for “continuation” on their side (Abu Dhabi). It appears to be an Al Ain position.

it is my first experience, “project”, have no information about entry processes.
any information???

Hi,

I see Dubai are still recruiting for approach controllers. What’s the situation like over there at the moment? I’m tempted to apply but all the horror stories about Dubai moral and working conditions I’ve heard over the years are putting me off. Are things improving?
