Uniforms for controllers
I was wondering why a standard uniform has never been established for controllers to wear?....with it's own epaulette system! One stripe for trainee's, two for ATCO's, three for SATCO's etc.
It would be nice to be recognisable and distinguishable walking through an airport :) |
Or walking through an industrial estate in Ayrshire! :}:}
|
Very funny!
|
Like it. But it's not April is it?
|
Uniform
Join the RAF!!!! How many airports do you have to meet the public? Not many I suspect. We have trouble getting controllers to wear a collar, never mind a uniform!!:)
|
Ha, what a brilliant suggestion.
I could demand a salute from every uniformed ATCO I see, just like the old AA, while supping on my Costa's Americano at CTC :} Us engineers could get overalls.....with different levels of grease stains down the front depending on how important we are, or maybe different sized tool cases. RS |
Oh yeah.wud b nice to wear the same clothes every day....:bored:
We cud follow AirFrance and ask Giorgio Armani to think of smth for us :E |
If you want people to notice you and know what you do when you walk through a terminal, why don't you just keep your headset on?
It's a great look. Honest. |
Yes, there could be two colours, blue and buff.
Doing departures Controllers could do it in the blue wholst the arrivals Controllers could all dp iy in the buff!! On second thoughts you might also need a pink set if you get stuck working the FIR. |
And the ATSAs could wear.......chevrons :hmm: One for ATSA1, 2 for ATSA2 etc...:ugh:
|
I hear at the new Prestwick Centre a dress code is going to be introduced.....long dresses for ATSA's, mini's for ATCO's and shorts for TMA controllers?? :)
|
Didn't Newcastle have uniforms for a while?
|
I don't like stripey board shorts.:)

Worked for Huntings at Barkston Heath 15 years ago and we had just that.
The SATCO was disgruntled that the qfi's both civil and mil were saluted by the RAF police at the gate ( as they were in growbags they never knew from a distance who was mil and who wasn't an officer!) as a result we had a uniform of Navy blue trousers, Navy jumper,Navy tie, black shoes and a white shirt with civil aircrew style rank tabs. a captains 4 for the SATCO, who ironically still didnt get a morning salute as there was no mistaking who he was, 3 for his deputy, 2 for humble controllers, and a mere 1 for yours truley as an atca. one of the snags with the "uniform" was the number of times i was asked for product advice at the Grantham branch of Safeways whilst doing the Butty run! |
How about something like this for the SATCOs?

One of the very, very few things about working at Kidlington back in the early 70s was the allowance they paid ATC staff for clothing. We were expected to look smart - which we did, anyway - and most of us spent the money on blazers. Contrast that with some places I could think of nowadays where one might get the impression that it was a bunch of dustmen moonlighting as ATCOs!!!
|
I think that uniforms are an excellent idea. For the "oldsters" amongst us how about styling oneself on Kenny Everett dressed as the American General in the Kenny Everett Video Show from the 1980s?
|
Any truth in a rumour I heard about a Stansted Watch Manager who, on appointment, went off and bought himself a big bomber jacket, had 'ATC Watch Manager' stitched into the back of it, and would then mince around the terminal building at Stansted in it with his briefcase and headset?
Made worse, apparently, by the fact that the guys and gals at Stansted don't actually have to go anywhere near the Terminal building on a day-to-day basis......... |
DC10RM - you may have discovered the secret plan within NATS HR to deal with anyone expecting a final-salary pension.....
"Round 'em up, put 'em in a field, and bomb the b*stards!" |
|
If you want people to notice you and know what you do when you walk through a terminal, why don't you just keep your headset on? |
A uniform would be highly unlikely purely because it would have to come out of someone's budget, although nats does have a lot of spare candy lying around after robbing us blind with the......... different debate.
Air22-various managers have tried to re-instate a dress code every now and then. If it ever happened then every oxfam shop in the country would sell out of big kipper ties and frilly seventies shirts:E |
I hope this was a big joke?
Some people just love the idea of uniforms, then to suggest epillettes is even more bizarre. "Look at me! I HAVE EPILETTES GODAMMIT, count my pips" |

Interesting thoughts.I assume you haven't been in a huge traffic load when you would rather be naked in front of the screen than wearing a tie.
The day I get to wear a suit and I tie at work is the day when I will quit ATC. Standard ATC uniform should be shorts and a shirt(even in winter conditions). Cheers all. Gianni |

On any NATS future uniform I'd have thought it would be one stripe for Band 1, two stripes for Band 2, three stripes etc...

There's a rumor that at ATCC Stockholm, they have bikini-fridays...
|
I HAVE EPILETTES GODAMMIT I remember hearing a story many years ago, from Gerry Wigglesworth, of someone (at Preston?) submitting a claim for torn clothing and requesting a replacement being issued with a "dustcoat, brown, storemen for the use of,". |
I suggest the company crest should be crossed turds with a blowfly cluster.
What about a range of campaign ribbons and medals. Olympics in London in 2012 should surely be a campaign medal. What about sitting between two Approach controllers who had dodgy vindaloo the night before, meritorious service? What would constitute the ATC equivalent of the VC? Maybe ceremonial swords to be broken over the knee, in case of extreme stuff-up. |

When I first worked in Guernsey the controllers had uniforms complete with the desirable stripey epaulettes AND a peaked hat. The then Airport Commandant (there's a clue to the ethos of the place) had scrambled egg on his as well. I seem to recall that they also had a shirt and shoe allowance. The whole thing died a death as various scruffs like me were recruited from the UK. The whole idea had only one benefit - it saved the wear and tear on your own clothes.

Serco has a nice line in blue serge trousers with an accessorising fetching light blue polyester shirt. Plus you get to wear a name badge (in case they forget who you are)
|
Remember Kenny Everett with his micky take of an American general? He had 12" (at least) extensions to each shoulder just to take the medals, and rings all the way up each arm! I bet some senior controllers would end up looking the same way!
|
Many of the girls at AMS wear Dutch Caps:suspect:
|
Perth many years ago had a uniform much as Man Friday described.

This one raises its head every so often but I'm surprised that it has come up now in the penny pinching enviroment we are working in.
The first time I came across the suggestion (in a unit far far away) it was universally supported by some very senior controllers with one proviso - everyone got to wear 5 bars on their shoulders. The idea was dropped quite quickly after that. :} |
We got a Swanwick uniform! flip flops, bermuda shorts and abercrombie shirts. Perhaps a cap could be provided to identify us from the office staff!:E

Ok what on earth is that photo Gadaffi is wearing? It looks like a scene from Gunfight at OK Coral!
