Uniforms for controllers

Uniforms for controllers
I was wondering why a standard uniform has never been established for controllers to wear?....with it's own epaulette system! One stripe for trainee's, two for ATCO's, three for SATCO's etc.
It would be nice to be recognisable and distinguishable walking through an airport

Join the RAF!!!! How many airports do you have to meet the public? Not many I suspect. We have trouble getting controllers to wear a collar, never mind a uniform!!

Ha, what a brilliant suggestion.
I could demand a salute from every uniformed ATCO I see, just like the old AA, while supping on my Costa's Americano at CTC
Us engineers could get overalls.....with different levels of grease stains down the front depending on how important we are, or maybe different sized tool cases.

Yes, there could be two colours, blue and buff.
Doing departures Controllers could do it in the blue wholst the arrivals Controllers could all dp iy in the buff!!
On second thoughts you might also need a pink set if you get stuck working the FIR.

One for ATSA1, 2 for ATSA2 etc...

Worked for Huntings at Barkston Heath 15 years ago and we had just that.
The SATCO was disgruntled that the qfi's both civil and mil were saluted by the RAF police at the gate ( as they were in growbags they never knew from a distance who was mil and who wasn't an officer!)
as a result we had a uniform of Navy blue trousers, Navy jumper,Navy tie, black shoes and a white shirt with civil aircrew style rank tabs.
a captains 4 for the SATCO, who ironically still didnt get a morning salute as there was no mistaking who he was,
3 for his deputy, 2 for humble controllers, and a mere 1 for yours truley as an atca.
one of the snags with the "uniform" was the number of times i was asked for product advice at the Grantham branch of Safeways whilst doing the Butty run!

One of the very, very few things about working at Kidlington back in the early 70s was the allowance they paid ATC staff for clothing. We were expected to look smart - which we did, anyway - and most of us spent the money on blazers. Contrast that with some places I could think of nowadays where one might get the impression that it was a bunch of dustmen moonlighting as ATCOs!!!

I think that uniforms are an excellent idea. For the "oldsters" amongst us how about styling oneself on Kenny Everett dressed as the American General in the Kenny Everett Video Show from the 1980s?

Any truth in a rumour I heard about a Stansted Watch Manager who, on appointment, went off and bought himself a big bomber jacket, had 'ATC Watch Manager' stitched into the back of it, and would then mince around the terminal building at Stansted in it with his briefcase and headset?
Made worse, apparently, by the fact that the guys and gals at Stansted don't actually have to go anywhere near the Terminal building on a day-to-day basis.........
