Validity of OJTI

According Commission Regulation EU 340/2015, we know that validity of the OJTI endorsement is just for 3 years. The OJTI endorsement may be revalidated completing refresher training on practical instructional skills during its validity period. Which kind of refresher training you complete during OJTI period of validity? Sometimes it happens that we don't have atco to train within the period of validity, in this case it is correct that the OJTI endorsement expires?? Thanks for your cooperation

Thank you LookingFAJ, my question was a little different. I'd like just to know which kind of refresher training OJTI's of other european countries complete during period of validity.

validity of OJTI

The answer will depend on what approvals you have in place.

We have approval to carry out OJTI renewals in the simulator with pseudo trainees.

If you don't have approval to regain an OJTI endorsement on anything other than a real trainee in a live environment then the OJTI endorsement will lapse and it will need to be re-validated when you get a new trainee.

There can be additional complications in re-activating a lapsed endorsement and here in the UK our training plan has to contain a specific procedure for doing so.

Thank you very much tea4two and sheepless for your kind answers..
My doubt is about the correct meaning of refresher training for OJTI in EU 340/2015. In my opinion it should be just to confirm OJTI practical skills in local ATC procedures (by mean ATC simulator exercises), and not to revise or verify pedagogical skills as interpreted by few ANSPs...

I agree LookingFAJ, probably we can say that the best interpretation of refresh training for OJTI, as reported in EU 340/2015, is a mixture of ATC practical and pedagogical skills in local procedures. It cannot be a theorical revise of general pedagogical skills of the OJTI course.

How about:
Some self study/revision of the pedagogical theory and techniques, perhaps via E-learning.
Followed by some simulator sessions to practice these techniques.
Then a short workshop/group session enabling the OJTIs to discuss issues they have come across in real life.

ANSP are increasingly cost driven and most will do the minimum that the regulator will accept.

When the OJTI endorsement was introduced many people got it written on their licences just applying for it, at least in Spain. Today, it seems there is more and more regulation on this... really, I dont think this makes any sense, but it is the way things are turning. Someome must be making a profit out of it...

I dont think it takes a course, plus refreshment courses etc to teach air traffic control to a new colleague at a certain unit. Things are not that complicated; excessive regulation makes them more complicated than they are.

You are probably a very competent OJTI. Many controllers will be without any course.

Historically little training was given for this role. I can remember being trained by one person who had no concept of transferring skills and sat perched on the edge of their seat saying what I should say to EVERY RT call.. It became a contest for me to beat him...

Later in life I was interviewing a very competent OJTI as to the skills required to teach on the job. He, as you have said - stated none, you just know what to do. He did have 35 years experience and was a natural teacher.

A good OJTI course will give you a good insight into how your trainee is learning and some techniques you can use to help.

I have run a number of courses, for various organisations, over the past years and ALL the students have agreed that they learnt useful concepts and techniques. Not all these will be used, but many will help both the trainee and the Instructor.

OJTI courses have not been designed just to please regulation. They are considered necessary to give the required skills to ALL OJTI. Not just those with natural ability.
