Security in your unit
Hi there!
With all the hype in the media security is a topic in talks among colleagues. Iīm a bit concerned that security at our unit (I wonīt reveal it here, but itīs not protected being inside airport perimeters) is not good enough.
-Is it possible to bring backpacks into your Ops room, be it as staff or as a visitor?
-Do you have "staff" in your Ops room who have no training to speak of, who come and go on a weekly basis? It makes it kind of hard to identify people who donīt belong into the room.
-Is it possible to enter your Ops room with a fake or stolen ID-card?
-Do you have fallback plans should there be a catastrophic failure of your unit?

Awww, come on guys, give the OP a break. He's asked some questions which obviously concern him and he deserves some answers to those questions.
So, taking each one in turn...

Yes, of course. After the security people have scanned them, done a manual search and removed anything dangerous...like your sandwiches. The ones that frighten me are bringing in black football-shaped things with BOMB written on the side.

I think a week or two in the Seychelles should do it.

To enter my ACC, you just have to dial "6412859" on the keypad beside the door. (I remember it easily as this is also my credit-card code)
Once inside, you can walk around naked if you wish, no-one will notice.
And don't shout it too loud : the automatic door has been unserviceable for 3 years now, so the door stays open 24h...

P.L. you probably also remember the time a colleague of ours - who enjoyed dressing up and playing cowboys and indians at weekends - decided to bring his replica six shooter on site during the height of an IRA alert. He too had a deep and meaningful with the MOD Plods for several hours!!

Such procedures are interesting to me. I have worked in central government. I won't disclose which department, needless to say security is a high priority.
Security Vetting is a must for anyone working in the building, and I presume it is the same for ATC buildings. As a result, "we" have been CTC cleared (and in the case of the government work definitely more on top of that). We could enter and exit with whatever we liked. Only un-vetted people and visitors are checked upon arrival. In that case, it is very thorough.
I do not understand why Security is made a big thing of in the media. They are a set of simple and easy to follow guidelines. The more you follow, the safer your information / premises from theft of unauthorised incursion.
Frankly, ID cards made by a serious and security concious organisation should be difficult to forge. Best of luck destroying your undisclosed ATC building, but sadly your high explosives, thick accent, henchman look with sports bag, might be a give-away to the security
