Mayfield 3F ?
Hi All,
MAY 3 F
To EGKK only.
SPEED: MAX 250 KT below FL100
Unless Otherwise Authorised.
SID
EPM @ 5000'
MAYFIELD VOR @ 5000'
MAX 220 KT
I read that as, you can accelerate to 250 KTS or 250+ if authorised, however you must slow down to 220 KT by Mayfield as this is speed control from the holding facility during the initial/intermediate approach phase to EGKK.
Is this correct?
As I've been told it is 220 KT the whole way, if so what's the point of the 250 KT blurb as you're not getting above 5000'.
Cheers

220Kt is specified at MAY because that is the speed on which the hold is based.
The latest PANS-OPS (4th) edition specifies 230Kt as the maximum holding speed for CAT C+ holds.
This hold is probably based on the old criteria of 220Kt so hence the specified limit.
So even if there was nothing specified at MAY one would have to be 230Kt or less by then.
Heathrow require that any aircraft unable to accelerate to 250Kt after noise abatement procedures to notify ATC. They say that poor speed performance can result in a delay.
Therefore ATC are expecting 250Kt after noise unless told otherwise.
That would make it - noise procedure, accelerate to 250Kt then decelerate to 220Kt by MAY.

It is probably all academic. I am almost certain that somebody who ought to know told me the other day that the Mayfield SID will no longer be issued for LL-KK traffic as it is difficult to integrate into the other Gatwick arrival traffic. What you will get instead I cannot recall but more than likely a MID then get peeled off to HOLLY & WILLO.

Correct Vlad.
Although,in my opinion (and a few others) the current routeing is not difficult, it has just been made difficult because of constant tinkering with. It used to be that LL tower phoned KK radar for the release. TMA got a strip for reference. If you wanted to take the a/c off the SID early (i.e for left base on 08R/ right base on 26L), you just co-ordinated with TMA. Job done.
Then all sorts of procedures were introduced meaning that, what previously involved a couple of simple phone calls, now involves all sorts of people phoning up and ferrying strips aorund the room.
The new procedure will be that the a/c leaves LL on MID SID climbing to min stack. Probably simpler but a longer routeing.
