maintaining RVSM status

To obtain RVSM status I know that the aircraft has to satisfy certain equipment requirements and then to overfly one of the height monitoring units.
But, once its granted, how often does the check have to be re-done? Or is it a lifetime approval?

I am not aware of any requirement to redo the check however it is a requirement to record the captains, FO's and standby altimeter readings once an hour in RVSM airspace to compare them and this will show up any discrepancy between them which will in turn prompt an investigation into why. My best guess would be that if all three sources were faulty (unlikely) then a new check might be required.

Maybe worth looking at the EUROCONTROL/CFMU/RVSM web page (plus other pages included in the EUROCONTROL /CFMU web-site) .........

Thanks Fly3.

Is the requirement to cross check the altimeters a legal requirement or is that airline specific??
