Heathrow/Luton/Stansted quiet hours

Morning all,

Sorry to ask but we were having a pub debate which I need answered by ATC professionals. This was a question as to whether you could plan a general aviation flight at night in the early hours which would get close to or even cross LHR.

I believe that there is virtually no traffic in the Heathrow area between about 1am-4am most nights, even more so on a Sunday morning 1am -4am. In addition I think Luton and Stansted would be quiet and City closed. The only major airport busy would be Gatwick.

Please put us out of our misery and say whether I am right or he is right when he said "I wouldn't bet on it."

There is beer on this!

Cheers,

Julian

Dunno the situation nowadays, but when I worked there we'd have been most happy to accommodate you to break the boredom - probably would have offered you an ILS approach and go-around too!

Luton and Stansted are pretty busy too but Heathrow is dead midnight till 4. mind you, you couldn't expect an approach(ILS or otherwise) as these are airports shall not be used for training flights - I got turned down at Gatwick at few christmases ago.

Just checked my log book (pilots) . . . 19 May 1971

Cessna 150J
GAWRK
EGKB 1555 <> EGLL 1630
EGLL 1710 <> EGKK 1749
EGKK 1850 <> EGKB 1911

Halcyon Days . . . early command time . . . and somewhere I still have the bill.

Trouble is you still have to look skyward every time you hear an aircraft - it is in your blood - which is now on the lamp post *!^?!!
