I too would have to recommend the Strand. I stayed there when I went through the college for the majority of my time there. In my opinion it is one of, if not the best place to stay whilst at the college.

Cool. 2 recommendations is enough for me! I shall get in touch with the people at The Strand.

How long a stay would you recommend I book initially, perhaps with the possibility of moving out to house share later down the line?

Cheers

The lovely lady at the Strand doesn't require a length of stay - it's on a week by week basis (unless you don't pay your rent!)

I stayed in a B&B next door to the Strand and still recommend the Strand as the best of Westby Road B&Bs. Flatscreen tellys in every room, laundry facilties, study area, and a cracking lounge. Excellent for the money.

p.s. I've heard Liz called a few things, "Lovely" wasn't one of them

As paperclip said there is no length of stay. It's week by week, mainly because most people who stay there stay for extended periods and there is always a high demand, especially when new courses come around.

Another reccomendation for the Strand or the Ravensbourne on Westby Road. The Ravensbourne is next door to the Strand and the owners of the 2 are good friends; and do a lot for each other in terms of the running of the places.

Excellent value for money, the owners of the 2 run them solely for Trainee ATCOs so you are living with people you know from work only, no random weekenders! You have full use of kitchens and associated facilities on a "leave it how you would expect to find it" basis. You also have your own lounges; the owners are happy to stay out the way and let you get on with it.

p.s. I've heard Liz called a few things, "Lovely" wasn't one of them
Awww you're being harsh, she was lovely really

B+Bs have the advantage of not having to prepare your own food, i.e. more studying time.

No that's not true, b&b doesn't serve evening meals but do provide breakfast, normally just cereal milk bread sort of stuff.
Make sure you go to one with a kitchen so you aren't constantly eating out or living on microwave food.

Sorry Slideshow, I meant to say a BB+EM guest house. As for the Breakfast option, go for the Full English, (or Scottish).
If you are still hungry I think the college has its own canteen.
Bon appétit!

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned this but once you have finished your training do you have to stay with NATS for a curtain number of years to repay training costs ect. Can't find anything on the website that says you do but logic is telling me something different.

Thanks is advance

But when you leave college you won't have a fully valid licence, so really will have to stay for a while to become valid!

Best not let slip to your instructors/OJTIs if you're thinking of jumping ship asap.

I for one would not be very motivated with respect to training someone with such plans. Why waste mine and the company's time for someone that's just using us?

I agree with Roffa 100% - In my current job I train people, when I know they are using it as a stepping stone for something else and are leaving as soon as possible it does get to me a little bit....almost seems a waste of my efforts!

PDF,
My job is like that too, but I can always console myself with a Full English, (or Scottish) breakfast!
Bon appétit.

The job of a trainer is not to plan ahead for the future of the trainee and the company. It's simply to give the trainee the tools and skills required for validation, whether he'll stay for a month or for 20 years.

It's the company's policies and management, and several other life and work matters that will determine how long and why a trainee will be retained for.

Management move on to better things and/or jump ship all the time, often after having done their damage, so why shouldn't lower level employees be allowed to do the same ?

Very eloquently put, BigDaddyBoxMeal: or as I recall a manager once said to me - "if you want loyalty, get a dog..."

Thanks paperclip and PDF

However when did i ever mention i was planning to 'jump ship' or that i was using nats as a 'stepping stone'?

Just most people would want to know what sort of contract the were entering into.
