Question

Are you guys doing training lately or just overworked??? Came in wednesday night, AVAGO2B, crap weather, radar vectored to ILS 21L, vectoring was ok, controller didn't seem to be impressed with us as we asked to turn base within 8 miles to avoid weather. Got onto the LOC at FL 090, got asked to slow to 160 IAS, so we did... Advised him we were now above glide, we got told to take up a heading of 310, although we advised him we could make it straight in. The next few minutes must have been overkill for him as we could not get a call in, trying to tell him we would now pick up base for 21L to avoid. Next thing you know a calm relaxed controller comes on, directs his traffic and no more radio cluttering.....

My question is, do you guys train ATCO's (in sheeit weather) or was the poor guy just overloaded??

Sh*te wx is the best time to perform training. OJTI should not let safety get compromised, so if WX avoidance was a problem because you could not get a word in, he might have let it go a tad too far.

That said, "CB days" are a bit**!

Not sure about FAJS but seeing that we use the same system we do have ''WEATHER RADAR'' if you can call it that. Its very limited and cant be used to vector aircraft around storms. At our station 60% of the time its not working. On the radar all you see is a blue or brown blob, depending on the intensity of moisture picked up, in the area of the storm. Blue can also just be a heavy rain shower. In durban you always have some blue on the radar due to the humidity in the air. The brilliant system we have throws the weather radar over the terrain clearance chart which means if theres a lot of ''blue'' on the radar you have to switch the WR off to see the chart.

For the training Q. We put a message on the datis that the pilots receive with the weather ie. Dual training on twr and/or app.

FAJS also have a weather radar similar to the one described above. As for the rest, some of the ATC are inexperienced, unmotivated and sometimes downright incompetent although never enough to be unsafe (thank goodness). I'm afraid it's luck-of-the-draw as to who you get on any given day.

The powers that be have the same leadership skills as the hounorable Mr Malema so it's as good as it's going to get for the near future.

Most of the training is on the job, i.e. Very little sim training so the students have to take what they can get wrt weather, ils calibrations and any other extraordinary circumstances.

Overall I think the service is not bad considering the circumstances, however it is a long way off world class, especially where consistency is concerned.

One thing I have learnt about ATNS is that you often have to find things out yourself

On your pronav display you will see a whole lot of small icons on the right side. They will show you the weather around all the major airports and the info is updated every few mins!!!!

Lovely to sit at CPT and inform the pilots of how the wx looks where they are going to!!!!!!!!!!!

What a Circus, but then again, we all knew the result before the bet...

We don't need help

Why do you need foreign controllers if you can work the remaining few into the ground?
Original SWC plan was to have 6 controllers in the morning, 6 controllers in the afternoon and 5 controllers on a nightshift on the 4 pre-sequencing Area sectors into FAJS.Final result = 5 in the morning, 5 in the afternoon and 3 on a nightshift.
Give them 7 hour shifts-work 2 hours break 30 mins-work 2 hours-break 30 mins and then work 2 hours.Request all the remaining guys to sell 2 off days and vuella problem solved! You don't need 42 controllers, you can do it with 23!
All not negotiable because that's what I want and you do NOT work 144 hours!(If you don't sell your off days)
You then enforce these shifts from a month before the SWC start to get the guys endurance up to standard ( fitness training)
Let's see how long the people will last in the middle of the winter running at full capacity from 0600 until 0100 (19 hours) as predicted by the "ENFORCER".
Yes 2 resignations and 2 non-validations did not help the course but eeishhh some of us would like to continue to work beyond SWC 2010!!
Enforcer I admire you for only having 3 days off during the SWC,but don't expect the same from me,I am one that would like to continue beyond SWC.I hope your Guardian Angels will keep up with you.
Yes I am concerned, very concerned and I am one of the more experienced guys.

Hey all,

I was hoping somebody could help me with some direct contact address for ATNS...
I had a contact that I received from a former colleague of mine at Eurocontrol, for LouiseD, but this email does not seem to be working....
Any contact address from somebody in the training devision would be highly appreciated, others from the ops devision would as well be appreciated ofcourse.

Cheerio mates,
take care during the world cup!

Louise left ATNS years ago and now lives in Australia and has not been with ATNS for over 2 years.

you have PM however you should be more specific in what information you are looking for so that we can direct you to the correct department.

Alternatively there is a tab on the ATNS website that you can submit queries on and these will be forwarded to the relevant person.
