The medical's not *horribly* onerous unless you have some kind of pre-existing condition. Even then, quite a lot of conditions can potentially be approved but it may take quite a while and a lot of extra appointments. It's hearing, sight, blood tests (cholesterol, diabetes etc), ECG, mental health, blood pressure, height, weight, reactions etc etc - it's very broad ranging. According to my doctor, they're pretty much looking for any risk factors as well as any condition you might currently have. If you do have a medical condition of any kind, they're also looking at how it's managed. They're very conservative.
It can also take quite a while. The actual medical is about 2 hours, but it's CASA that approves it after their medical officers have reviewed the DAME's report. If there's anything even slightly out of the ordinary, it *will* be queried. eg. I had to provide detailed surgical reports from 20+ years ago (which really wasn't easy!).
Until you get that medical back from CASA, don't assume that you'll get it. I wouldn't do anything you can't reverse until you have a definite start date (which may be many, many months away). You won't get that until the medical's approved.
Cheers,

Very good point on not doing anything irreversible until medical is passed and offer is through...getting the medical out of the way sooner rather than later so that's another thing done can't hurt.

Hello all, first time poster long time lurker here.
I also got the call on Friday! I'm sure those of you who also got it can relate to the relief after living with this application for a year.
As far as the medical goes, you need an "Aviation Reference Number" (ARN), which we'll get in due time. I'm not in any rush.
For those interested, here is a rundown of what you need to pass for the medical: http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_reg/casr1998333/s67.160.html
It doesn't look like you have to be an elite athlete, just someone who isn't going to drop dead at the controls.
Congratulations to my new colleagues and good luck to everyone going through the testing now. If you're in the latter group, just remember patience is the name of the game.

Yeah got the call on Friday too! Have my application status sitting on "Complete Class III Medical" like Bennett.
I'll admit I already got my Class 3 sorted , but in hindsight I think I got a little excited with wanting to get everything on my end sorted and out of the way.
I'd say wait until they give you the go to get started - there's plenty of time still, and you don't want to be sitting and wasting approximately half a year of the 2-year validity period (I'll likely have to renew around the end of the course). The medicals are thorough, though not as stringent as that for pilots as far as pre-existing conditions go.
The news so far is that our batch (which at AC was told would start in Aug) is likely to make a start early 2016 (probably Jan), and even the batch in June had to be apparently moved up to October this year.
All the best to candidates in whichever phase! It has and will be a very long process indeed.

Hi all! Long time lurker, first time poster here.
I'm also one of the lucky ones who received a call on Friday afternoon. If all goes well, I should be looking to start on a tower course early 2016.
To give anyone that is wondering an idea of the timeline so far:
- I applied on the 14th October 2014.
- The required online testing was to be completed no later than the 5th of November 2014.
- I had my assessment day in Melbourne on the 4th of Feb 2015 (there was also a phone interview prior to this).
- Then I finally got a phone call on the 19th of June 2015.
As you can see, it was a pretty long process just to get to this point. From here I still have to go and get a CASA Class III medical.
I'm looking forward to potentially being on course with some of you next year!

Hi all! I too am I long time lurker, first time poster. I attended the assessment centre day 3 weeks ago and yet my status still hasn't changed from the online portal. It is still set at 'assessment centre completed'.
Can anyone tell me if they waited this long without a change in their status? It sounds like most people on this forum have found out within a couple of weeks from their assessment centre day if they had been accepted or no. I'm hoping that no news is good news....
Any replies will be much appreciated!
Thanks

Hi SydneyATC. Thanks for the response. That was a really quick turn around for you. It does seem to be an erratic process given that my assessment centre day was two weeks before yours and I still haven't heard anything and you have. If you don't mind me asking, what did your status change to online?
Thanks
Thanks
It's definitely tough when you've got no visibility of what's going on, and when dates are inconsistent

All I was looking for was clarification on how long some people have waited which stampin8or provided to me. I wasn't seeking to understand what is happening in the recruitment team. SunnySA, perhaps you should take your own advice and relax.

mmmm, pedigree 9, might pay to keep your mouth shut rather than open it and confirm yourself an idiot. SunnySA might turn out to be your training officer, or even better, your Check Controller
