"Contact Director......." Correct RT
Hi All,
Quick question for ya,..
Cannot find any mention of standard RT when told "to Contact Director" in CAP 413, 493, 32, etc
Some wise heads say "just pass callsign only" others "pass heading, level, restrictions," etc, as per usual.
Can anyone please supply correct or preferred response, please?
Cheers,
wingworker

My tuppence worth...
A director frequency is normally used when things are busy and the director normally sits next to the approach controller. They will probably simply hand the same strip to the chap(ess) that is sitting next to them when you change frequency. They will know what you have been instructed to do by looking on what has been written on the strip.
What the above in mind - I would just call with your callsign!

If this helps I know at MAN/EGCC they always say "ABCXXX Contact Director Callsign Only 121.350". Therefore most crew just submit a simple "Director ABCXXX".
This appears pretty much standard practice in the UK when a director is needed.

In our book, we are supposed to use this format:
"Contact Director on XXX.XXX with callsign only"
You hear lots of different variations though. As BAe said, most just reply with "Callsign only, XXX.XXX" or something along those lines

Having flown out of MAN alot I was very used to only passing call sign to director when passed over, as they always said 'callsign only'. However, once flying into LGW, I was asked to contact director without the requirement of callsign only. This is what I did however, and was promptly put in my place by the director, asking for cleared level etc....
So, I just do what Im told, if they ask callsign only thats whats I'll do, if not then make a standard call.

If its Intermediate Director you're being transferred to then we need the whole nine yards..callsign/FL/ac type/wx received/speed.
If its Final Director callsign is enough 99.9% of the time unless instructed otherwise i.e "Report your SPEED to Director..."

The idea behind all this is that pilots making contact with a FINAL Director (ie the bloke who puts you on the ILS) make short calls so the frequency is kept as clear as possible. This achieves two objects 1) it enables the Director to make calls at precisely the moment he needs to to achieve tight spacing and 2) stops plane bumping into each other when they're only 2.5-3nm apart because the Director can't get a word in.
Unfortunately, the powers that be decided that the callsign of all controllers involved in the Approach Control function at busy airports have the "Director" callsign so pilots, understandably, can be confused. In a nutshell, when you transfer to s different ATC Unit, e.g. from London Control to Gatwick Director you should report cleared level, ATIS, aircraft type, etc. When you are then changed to the second Director you should use callsign only, as (hopefully) instructed by the first Director.
