If you want to attract people to OMBD and God forbid to Jebel Ali, you will need a serious serious increase in salary! Living here can be great but you need lots and lots of money to do so!

Not only a small salary increase, but also allowances need to be seriously increased! People are still leaving quicker than they are coming. And yet another is bound to go... by the way I can not imagine that the company in charge really realises how seriously they are in trouble!!!!

Cheers

Hi Mate

just back from hols, HB-UAE I am with You, Like MOST OF ALL OF US ARE!

There was a meeting before (or during) I left for my holiday, & now back to the pit with MORE Resignations in place!

You are right ALOT NEEDS TO be done, not only the Salary, but also the Allowances, especially Accomodation & Schooling Allowances!

And also keeping in mind the SALIK...... which costs me 4-CHARGES for evertime to/from work, & the continuous High RISING INFLATION......

Our H of Tr is leaving as in previous posts, & was offered around 70k....from DCA.......Quite SHORT of the 100k he REQUESTED!

So what about the Operational ATCO's who are contiuously in the 'Line of Fire'??

There were some who were individually contacted by DCA, but NO Concrete offer, even though without a SUBSTANTIAL Increase, Resignations will still be the Order of the Day!

Another Scandy-Ice Man had his last day at work the day before yesterday, with the NEXT Scandy-Ice Man to depart within the coming weeks!!

Management remember "People are still leaving quicker than they are coming"

Tick-Tock Tick-Tock

Hi Tin Bullet. How are you boys getting along without me. Been back with Airways 18 months, looking at ME contracts again.
Do you know if the DCA are making direct hire offers, or have they done a deal with Serco.
I would be interested in talking to someone from DCA if there interested in EX Dubai Controllers.
The talk DCA had with Head Training, was the 70000 dhs a bonus, or was that a monthly figure. Has DCA made any offers to any of the resigning staff.
Any more news about the Serco contract for next year, eg starting salary, package. Have been hearing rumors of 50% pay increase, how about the rest.
Hope you boys enjoying the rugby,
Go the All Blacks.

Cheers Thunder, AKA, the small guy

Having ME currencies pegged to the greenback is a key issue. You have lost around 5% in your earnings in the last week (40%+ to the Euro, CAD, AUD etc in the last decade). If the following happens it may help the income slide situation:
The contrast between the fortunes of the US, now being dragged down by its housing market, and the strong growth of the surplus nations of Asia and the Middle East is stretching their currency links to breaking point.
"There has been an unholy alliance in operation for a number of years with large current account deficits in the US being supplied by large current account surpluses in Asia and the Middle East. That arrangement is being questioned now," Westpac chief currency strategist Robert Rennie said yesterday.
Saudi Arabia pegs its currency, the riyal, to the US dollar but for the first time, the Saudi Monetary Authority has decided not to follow an interest rate move by the US Federal Reserve and chosen instead to hold rates steady.
It said it would take "appropriate steps" to halt a massive capital inflow that is pressuring inflation, but financial markets believe that Saudi Arabia will be forced soon to break its longstanding peg to the US dollar. If that happens, the rest of the Middle East would probably follow suit.

Hei Thunder

how's it goin Downunder? Seriously thinking of coming back to the PiT?

Well Tin-Bullet has some good info, which is what is being said at the PiT. It seems that the 70000DHS was a 'Total Pack' monthly, and NOT a bonus.

DCA, as rightly posted previously by others here, have approached & enquired on each a every ATCO resigning, (approx 550000DHS) just testing the water, but NO SUCH Contract was offered to any ATCO.

There was some kind of meeting between SERCO & DCA, but we dont know any figures, just hoping to hear the 'GOODIES' in coming weeks...if not months, perhaps an increase starting form January 08 me thinks!

Have been hearing rumors of 50% pay increase, how about the rest.
We will have to wait & see, for what's on the Table......

Until then, off to watch some Rugby for a World Cup Win!!

My question then is:

what are your current salaries and what would a 50% increase make them?

on top of that what is the story re accommodation etc?

Ok folks,

as a London tower controller giving serious thought to going out to DXB, can you give me some pros and cons please!

Forget about the salary issue, I know what the current deal is and I've heard the mutterings about the possible rise in Jan.

Can you tell me why so many are leaving?
What's the issue with the accomodation allowance?
What are the major attractions?
What's the job actually like, plugged in?

Thanks in advance

I'm sorry therat, what did I possibly say or did you infer I said, that says I have a chip? No wonder the other thread was closed if the personal attacks were this easy to come by. it seems you've deleted your original post now

therat
get an App radar rating with 3-5 years. They dont hire Twr only
Interesting considering they've just hired one of my buddies from LHR who's tower only.
Can anyone who actually works at DXB answer, please. Would love some local advice.
If there's anything offensive in my original post, please point this out to me and I'll change it asap.
Cheers

YellowSnow, Ignore the rat.

Don't worry about the serial pest who has a snipe and then deletes his posts to cover the evidence. A tip is to quote his full post in one of your posts and then we can get him banned.

You are correct about the hiring of Tower only rated controllers. Not only is the rat annoying but he is also wrong and his knowledge of the region is very old and out of date. That comes from not actually working here anymore but instead sniping from afar. From memory Dubai hired a tower only woman about 3 years ago, and have been doing so off and on ever since. But unlike the rat I won't pretend to know everything about everything so it would be better for a DB App. person to definitavely answer your queries.

Cheers.

(My opinion is that you should try and get a gig in AUH if you can get anywhere near the same money as the cost of living is lower and the lifestyle craps all over Dubai's. Traffic jams, Salik, traffic jams, building sites, traffic jams, sinking man made islands, cracking floating bridges, closed down expat clubs, crime ... etc etc... no thanks.)

Working In Dubai

If you haven't got all the replies as yet Yellow Snow here are some from the horse's mouth:

1) People leave this place because there is no serious sense of belonging. Most people come here for a jolly, to see how life is in one of the most futuristic place in the ME if not the world. They come here for the lifestyle and to buy some big expensive cars. Most Southern hemisphere folks come here to be closer to Europe as well. All of the above hold water but when you are here and you see that most of the money is eaten away by high accomodation rates and you are oppressed by poor managerial techniques(and this is not only Serco's fault) then people start rethinking their position. You have to state the reasons for coming here and maybe I can help you better
2)Current accomodation allowance is simply crap. No more to say.
3)Major attractions here is Dubai itself. Contrary to what ANSA says Dubai is still the best place to be and I would never dream of living anywhere else especially AUH. Yes Dubai has its problems but it still flushes AUH down the toilet a million times. If you want a pretty tranquil place I would choose RAK anytime.
4)The job itself is pretty chaotic. Tower has to cope with the ongoing taxiway closures and the lack of reasonable procedures which are cast upon it by DCA. Add some pretty useless equipment and there you have it.
5) Most people are single rated nowadays but SERCo policy is changing and people are getting dual ratings. At the moment it is Radar guys getting twr ratings and not the other way round. If you do not have any radar experience it may be tough for you to get one here.

Hope you find this useful. Money is everything to people working here and if its' not the main reason for your coming, being here it will soon become the only reason believe me!

Hi Yellow Snow

I came here tower only from the UK in May '06. So you know about the pay and thats good but as you seem to realise there is more to it than that.

After the first 6 weeks of cr@p that you would expect like setting up bank accounts, endless paperwork for visas, airport passes etc, finding accomodation you soon get into the reality of life here.

Traffic: Varies wildly with time of day/year and you just can't predict when you will get stuck but generally it's improving.

Accomodation: 140k ish allowance, 180k min for a reasonsable villa depending on location. You need to get in with the office here and scope out controllers who are moving on and have already done the legwork in finding the property, otherwise hard work. If you are brave/sensible/patient/canny, use the allowance to buy. It pays a big mortgage after all and you wont even touch your wages for it. BUT, do PLENTY of research first. Unless you bought in the UK years ago you will generally find properties here much bigger and mostly with pools/facilites for the money you will be spending. The alleged pay deal should address the issue for the next few years at least.

Lifestyle: Get over the frustrations above and enjoy it. Loads to do and as I've said in previous threads if you have a hobby in the UK the chances are you can do it better and cheaper here. If you are the outdoor type the options are almost limitless in the winter and frankly we don't find the summers as bad as many living here make them out to be. If you have a few dirhams in your pocket there is plenty to occupy your time. It is expensive to send money home at the moment so if you have debts look at your options.

Work: Not good. If you are NATS background you will have your eyes opened. There is a serious lack of standardisation here but in defence of ATC we are p?*sing into wind a bit. Controllers employed by two different employers with Airport developement and consultants telling the airport owners what they can do to improve it with the aviation authority saying the opposite. ATC sit in the middle trying to pick up the pieces and make it all work but it ain't easy.

Plugging in is frustrating and you will deal with diabolical airmanship when compared to ANY London airport. And if a pilot does cock it up the chances are you will be made the scapegoat as incident follow up regarding the airlines is...... questionable.

All that said, as in the UK, you leave it at the door and enjoy life outside. You will meet some awesome people and forge great frinedships and experience a very new life and culture.

There will be a few people who disagree with my entire post and others who agree but the best advice is to come out and have a GOOD look around. You would be amazed at how many come without researching and unsurprisingly hate it.

Hope this helps, feel free to PM me.

Cheers CR

Did you guys know that Alain in Dutch means "alone"???

Hahahaha, see you people of the sand soon, looks like the DCA $$$ rumours we're all smoke and mirrors, I guess the crappy US $ means I got a 5% pay raise without doing anything??? Nice!!

Did we even have airways in the UAE? Does a 285 heading after Ranbi count? I would even forget that most of the time...

F-K-D,

Tut tut, you obviously haven't been doing your Dutch homework. The nuns aren't going to be happy. That's another thirty strokes of the whip Silas.
