All radar approach functions are done from Christchurch, but there are some controlled aerodromes that still require procedural approach ratings due there being no radar coverage; ie. Gisborne, Napier, New Plymouth, Nelson, Queenstown, Dunedin and Invercargill.

When I lived in NZ $150k was a pretty good wage, especially in Chch, has it changed so much ?

In ref to the comment about semi skilled professions earning more, why is that ? Although you can't compare salaries directly between countries, recently in the UK Atco's were ranked 18th in a league table of incomes - and most radar controllers at the main centres are earning well over the £42k quoted. So over here it's one of the more highly paid professions.

Nothing wrong with asking about the money. Demanding and highly skilled, before you start the training checking the remuneration is a good idea. As much as we love it the mortgage needs to be paid !

Go the Air Services lot, hopefully their stand and solid request for higher wages will set an example for Airways controllers later this year / early next, when contract negs commence again. 30-60% is exactly what is needed to make NZ competitive with the rest of the developed world. Hope you guys follow suit.

Morning all,

BaldEd

Thanks for the info - just what I was looking for. Went to the website this morning and declared my "interest" - not sure if it went though, page just disappeared - no acknowledgment. Anyone else done this? Cheers.

work for airways nows. you will pay for airways to train you $12000, then they will not pay you until you validate which takes between 9 - 12 months depending on posting after the college. Starting salary $52000 plus shift pay. incremental rise each year worth $2500. expect to wait 2-3 years before posting to radar at christchurch or international tower salary $66000 plus shift pay.
hope this helps

I've watched this thread with interest! While the initial enquiry was from a "local" looking for info on salaries, its interesting seeing comments from overseas about the cost of living in NZ. I would suggest that most of you are slightly out of touch with recent changes that have occured in the land of the long white cloud.

House prices went through the roof.... and although we are now in a reccession they have dropped but not to the stage that they have become affordable. My humble shack in the frozen wastelands (Christchurch) has just been valued by the local council at NZD$850,000. The area in which I live has been invaded by families from the UK looking for a better life, half return to the UK within 6 months due to the cost of living. As one english friend put it "it was a damm sight cheaper taking a trip to ASDA or Tesco's than it is a supermarket here". Sorry Mr Heathrow Director a recent survey showed that it was cheaper to buy NZ dairy products in London than it is here downunder.....

So for those overseas, I would suggest that you do some research as things are a changing quickly downunder (except the b....y payrates)........

I've been here so long now that I consider my invasion to be a total success. Its fair to say that the IQ of both the UK and NZ rose around April 1976........................................................ .........

1976....

Not convinced many here were even watching Dr. Who then!

Best first 8 years of my life ended in 76, the 9th year was even more fun!
