Formation Flying

A group of us are planning a fairly long trip early next year in light aircraft. There’s going to be four aircraft all departing at pretty much the same time and following the same route. I was wondering what method of transit would be easiest for the controllers on route. Would it be better if we all called up individually or flew in two sets of two in loose(ish) formation? Any suggestions, comments could be appreciated.

We went to Iceland last summer, rented and flew around in 5 Cessnas. Had planned on flying formation all the time, but decided against it, the workload would be too high, especially when tumbling around the sightseeing spots.

What we ended up doing was flying OUT of any CTR (control zone) in loose formation. Reason was unfamiliarity with the airspace, easier just to follow the leader. Once out of the CTR, we'd break up into a even looser formation, say 1 NM separation.

Was still tense, everybody was afraid of colliding.

Anyway, would recommend anyone going there and seeing the vast beauty of the landscape. Seen it all from the ground, but even more beautyful from the air.

Some considerations:

1) Formation flying requires considerable training and practice. Only do it if you are current.

2) Formations can fly in any flight regime, even Class A airspace in IMC. All communication is with the leader and only the leader squawks.

3) You are less likely to collide in tight formation than "same way same day" formation because you are more assured of remaining in visual contact.

4) Formation flying is tiring. Is it a good idea for a long trip?

5) Formation flying requires more throttle movement, meaning that adjusting power and mixture can be less exact and therefore less economical.

6) Formations always fly much slower than even the slowest aircraft, to allow for closing and outside turns. This will result in the long flight being longer.

If the whole aim is to have fun and see a lot then I would not be flying in formation as far too much stress and workload for weekend pilots
