Call Next Established......???????

Hi people, this is a question that I have been meaning to ask for a while now after I had a heated argument with a commander about this subject.

When ATC instructs you "Aircraft Callsign 0001 Call next established"

What does ATC mean??? Call next established on LOC and Glide or just LOC?

I was told that ATC wants established LOC and Glide because if ATC wants LOC they will say "Aircraft Callsign 0001 Call next established LOC" if they want only LOC.

I tend to disagree on the grounds that ATC wants to know whether or not you are established on the Runway CL so that they can approach aircraft on a parallel rwy or hold an a/c for taxi etc...and they don't really care about whether or not you on the Glide thats mainly pilots concern. Plus I have never been told in any training whatsoever that when ATC says call next established they want LOC n Glide. The simple reason for the difference between Call next established LOC n call next established I feel is simply ATC shortening their instruction n savin air time.

However I could be totally wrong so please enlighten me people of greater knowledge..

Thanks guys...

Hi Coconut,

Speaking for myself, I'm interested in the Localiser only. Glidepath is your issue (unless of course I was foolish enough to leave you too high, then it does become my issue as well. ). I would ask a pilot to report established on the final approach track if I was vectoring for NDB, VOR or TACAN ( for the mil guys) approach as well.

Why? It lets me know when vectoring is truly terminated and you are happily under your own nav again. Also my book (albeit an Australian one) says I have to ask you to report established .

Provided I've given you the start altitude for the approach and cleared you for the approach, then level assignment is sorted from my end and becomes your issue ie your interpretation of the procedure.

Hope that helps.

Normal procedure at UK Civil Airports is for the Radar Controller, after giving an ILS intercept heading, to say "Report established on the localiser". Once the pilot has done so, ATC reply with "Descend on the ILS", but there's normally no requirement for the pilot to confirm that the aircraft has intercepted the glidepath.
