Living in Bournemouth

Hello,

Been offered a job at the college in Hurn and was wondering if anyone knew much about accomodation in the area like where is best to stay?

Will have wheels but dont fancy being to far away and what we talking a month have been budgeting for 200 to 250 quid a month, is this in the ballpark or way off the mark, dont care if its not the hilton just want a bed really.

Also gonna be commuting for the first wee while, anyone from Scotland who has to do this trip notice the Ryanair flights goes at a crap time to PK, what does everyone else do - is Southampton to PF or PH a good option as well??

Any help greatly appreciated.

p.s. do you know if you can get cheap flights aside from ryanair if employed by NATS?

Stayed in Bournemouth for nearly 6 months during flying training. Also had similarly restricted budget.

I stayed at Highbury Hotel in boscombe some 10 inutes away. Owned by a chap named John, Rooms ok and evening meals provided. Quite enjoyed my stay there.

A few chaps decided it would be wise to rent an apartment and cater for themselves, they ended up spending a small fortune.
Anyway give John a call, you'll probably find other pilots and controllers there.

In your situation I would look initially at renting a room in a house rather than a B&B and then look for something a little more permanent as and when you can

She has been doing so very well thanks, her money is on the clematis on westby road.

Can't comment about the B&B situation but you could look at on average £500 pcm for a rental flat - NATS give you £400 as living allowance so no problem there.

Flights - now that is a bugger!

FlyBe EGHI to EGPF good flight resonable times but if you don't book early enough then the cost does go through the roof.

BA citiexpress EGHI - EGPF - even better flight (typical BA standard you get FED!!) but the tax is the killer. Your fare could be £60 return but add tax and your over the £100 mark!

not many options on flights however in the winter the Ryanair flight times change and they are actually better!

Anyways any more Q's PM or post here, there are plenty of Scots at hurn who read this could give advice!

If you are flexible about your times and book them far enough in advance, I noticed that BA can be as little as £2 plus tax each way. I think FlyBe's lowest is £7 plus tax.

Should be no problem to book them a long way in advance if you know the college schedule.

Bournemouth Airport - Southampton by car: 40 mins, but allow an hour to include car parking. Last check in usually 30 mins before dep, but you can check in online with BA within 12 hours of departure if you buy a ticket online. Don't know about FlyBe

Long Term parking minimum charge £24. For stays of up to 24 hours, Short Term is better: £14.

Train from Christchurch-Southampton Airport might be more cost-effective but will take longer. Taxi Bournemouth-Southampton about £60 each way!!

Don't know if its changed form my days as well but you also get one trip home a month paid for so that should cover the cost of any flights during training.

Thanks for all the replies, but I will be working at the college and not a student, and will initially be commuting so will need to keep costs down to start with. Any more suggestions will be gratefully received

Deeko - I know you're coming down here to work rather than study, but it still may well be worth contacting the studient liason office at Hurn as they will have plenty of details wrt accommodation.

I'm looking at moving to the Bournemouth area for a couple of years - going to buy a flat down there.

I looked at quite a few areas when I was trying to decide where to buy. I can give you a quick summary of what I thought -

Boscombe - some nice houses but the high street is very rough, especially at night.

Southbourne - nicer, slightly dated high street and only a couple of pubs, but reasonably pleasant

Bournemouth centre - the place to be if you want all the night life and the better shops.

Christchurch - very pleasant and quite a historic town. Downside is that it gets quite busy with tourists in the summer. Also, an oldish population.
The closest place to the airfield would be the North side of Christchurch / Hurn.

Obviously, this is a personal view and other people may think very differently ! The nice thing about all of these parts is that you're very close to the sea.

I am thinking of renting a room at somte point and I was told a double room in a shared house would probably rent for 300 per month.

Del, My advice would be to get in touch with those nice people you met when you had your interview....I'm sure they will be delighted to help.

Have you been back for a visit to Hurn since? Worth a cheap Ryanair flight to get things sorted and you will be made most welcome at Hurn.

Staff at the unit may have rooms to let so make that call!
