This is a bit "off-the-wall," but does anyone know which controllers are the best paid?
At one time I'd heard that Germany had the best overall pay/benefit package, but perhaps the U.S. now leads. I did see that the median pay for the U.S. is now $92K. How does this compare with Australia or New Zealand or Japan or the UK?

Does anyone have some figures for comparison? As I said, the U.S. median (half get more; half - myself included! - get less) is $92K. This is salary only...benefits bring it up some. I doubt this figure includes FCT controllers, as they make considerably less.
The next island over from me, Rep Dom, paid poorly enough a few years ago that many controllers were forced to take second jobs as baggage handlers. I hope that is no longer the case.
In another instance, I asked a controller from Peru how much the airfare to Miami was. He said it was one month's pay.
I'm curious about this because as privatization increases, comparisons will be made and, perhaps, salary reductions suggested.

Fragrant Harbour, ATCO II (20 years exp.) on overseas contract, HK$77,000 p.m. plus HK$20,000 p.m. accommodation allow + 25% gratuity on contract completion. Max overall tax rate = 15%
US$1= HK$7.8 pegged

Top of pay scale after 30+years at what is refered to as a band 5 unit.
Salary £5642.80p
Unsocial hours [shift premium] £390.51p
Mileage allowance at 4p per mile £11.89p
Total £6045.20p
Tax paid £1623.60p
National Insurance [ a kind of Health service tax]£244.59p
Recreation club 30p
Pension £362
Total £2230.49p
Take-home pay £3814.71p
So far this financial year:
Total gross £57576.60p
Taxable pay £54680.60p
Tax paid £16675.99p
ER NI conts [ I think the employer pays this] £6321.05p

UK controllers work long hours compared to most, and retire later. Overtime is a relatively new experience, only over last couple of years, and limited to 15 days a year [roughly]

Trouble is a straight quote of salary is meaningless without relating that to cost of living. I know Swiss controllers are on pretty good money but then its an extremely expensive place to live.
Hong kong I suspect is also expensive, especially when it comes to property and rent.
Spain on the other hand is not an expensive place to live so I stand by my original assertion that the Spanish have the best deal. More pay than HK and better lifestyle?
So, start your Spanish lessons. I think the stampede will be in the direction of Malaga/ Palma/ Barcelona.

a house in Palma could cost more than a million of euros, a flat not less than a half million....flowman, do you really think properties are cheaper in Spain than in Belgium ? I meet some belgium friends..they have a wonderfull farm house at 8 Kms from the center of Brussels and they paid about 1/4 million. Try to buy a house like that 8 kms far away from Madrid downtown...prepared just about 2 million of euros.
As you really know in Spain is so cheap the wine, beers,tobacco,fruit...and the sunshine. Of course it's a very nice place to live..like Portugal too.

I know people who work in Madrid but live on the coast, very inexpensively.
We used to have 8 Spaniards working in flow control. They have all left, there is not one Spanish person left working here. I know they did not leave to be worse off in Spain (they did not leave just because of the weather either, although I have to confess it must have been a factor!).
I'm quite happy with my pay. I'm quite happy with the cost of living in Belgium (except the Auto taxes).
But given a choice I'd rather be working in Spain.

Dallas / Fort Worth isn't too expensive and the pay is GREAT <G> if you are at a higher level facility...
My cousin from Hamburg was basking in 23c two weeks ago <G> while visiting.

Here is some info on Switzerland.
Basic salary: Sfr 140 000 pa onwards
Radar allowance: Sfr 24 000 pa
Then you still get night shift and sunday/public holiday allowance. Not too much, but it adds up over a period of a year.
Tax is around 15%, but living conditions are a bit more expensive. If you stay close to the border, you can allways do your shopping in Germany.
All in all not a bad salary if you compare it to what the average Joe Soap earns.
Pity about the weather though. Tks for rubbing it in Scott!

I worked in HK until 15 months ago. I recently inquired, for an expat controller, if HK was hiring expats. The answer was and probably will always be, NO. So I don't think you will cause a stampede.
Salaries. In Canada the top operational controller salary is approximately $115,000 CDN per annum.
