ATC not allowed to have accents
My brother was telling me ATC arent allowed to have accents because it caused confusion in one situation and caused an accident....if this is true it seems highly racist, in a way.

Is that right donch noo eh? I work with a swede, Scotsman, Irish, Yank, Pommie, Zimbabwean and a kiwi. You Canadians are the most 'accented' of the lot.
ATC 'Traffic is aboot your 2 oclock'
Acft 'What someone is throwing shoes at us?'
ATC 'No budday I said aboot eh donch noo'
Acft 'Booty? What? Pirates? And no, my nose is not running?'

At my place of work we have 1 Scotsman, 1 Irishman, 1 Geordie lady, 1 Bristolian, 1 Brummie, 1 possibly 50% Welsh depending on his mood, all in ATC as all are 1st class over the RT, to me & aircraft

YVRKid, I think your brother has been listening to the accents of the various voices in his head
Concise standard phraseology (shut up Hammy!) as Silber says is very important indeed. And not delivered at machine gun speed as it can become very counter productive.
But then again, some countries "standard" phraseology take a bit of getting used to, and what means one thing in one place has a slightly different slant in another (take the example of the term "maintain" used in N. America vs it's use in UK airspace).

Personally, I speak more slowly at work, so the English can understand me. Even then, some of our military brethren have trouble with my pronunciation on the mediator line or perhaps that's just the mediator?

Who was the guy at MAN who then went down to the college at Bournemouth ?
Superb accent, really dry delivery, coaxed me through my IR way back when and really pissed the examiner off with hints and tips over the R/T
Accents make the difference and provided they are intelligable, who cares.
After all, where would we pilots be without that glorious phrase -
Rohjare, cleared direct Burryed

As an Ulsterman, I am quite often told that my pronunciation and tone are good. The only problem I've ever really had is with Spanish/Portuguese pilots who can mistake 2 and 3. Other than that it all works fine for me despite EZY's best efforts to through pilots of all nationalities into the mix!

Not an accent thing but
Used to have a guy who had a speech disorder (cant spell impedement).
" When weady turn wight for wobbo",
nice guy, but who interviewed him???
They were having a laugh.

As a Brit-in-Canada, I personally can't think of a more soothing and welcoming sound than that British accent that works Vancouver Terminal, almost makes me homesick. Not sure if its coincidence but on occasions the posh Brit controller has sent me direct to destination when the locals have been sent round the houses.
