Asking me what the score of the England match is when on freq. Take a hint from my (Belfast) accent, I don't care, and what's more, if they're losing it will give me reason to laugh at you!

Asking for the latest wx. We have an ATIS, dial it up, there's two of you and only one of me.

Or, telling me you have "the latest information...ah......mmmm...... Charlie I think it was", when it is Papa. Listen for an extra second and it will tell you, don't try to guess...........'cos you're no good at it.

Oh yes, and the obvious one, pilots who are too bl**dy cheery first thing in the morning, because contrary to popular pilot belief, it's not contagious!

This has been great, nice to see the standard gripes are pretty much the same all over, the only things i would have to add are

That we DO NOT give instructions for the fun of it!!

Being asked to confirm arrivals to airports not in our airspace, or like wise routings - we give you as much as we can

Busy days and nights, having to repeatadly call more than once to get a pilots attention, or give en-route clearances more than once, surely you have a flight plan that is the same as ours, if not we will help but please dont take all day confirming the route.

When it is busy, Please Listen out, nothing more infuriating to be asked "xxx123, Station, are you calling me!"

I could go on and on.......

You get the idea - What about from the other side

Calling on tower frequency for Wx, stand info, request wheelchair, order cabs, etc., when way outside DOC of frequency.
Every time a call is made outside 15nm/2000ft on twr frequency someone else is blocked. Call on APP or even better, on handling agent's frequency.

being told to monitor the frequency then calling up on it anyway. Just gets my back up and you get put to the back of the queue!

............or not listening out on the frequency when you should be!

Dirty Pierre - Clive Woodward always looks miserable! It's his own fault for leaving London Irish years ago, he seemed mildy happy then, must have been the copious amounts of Nigerian Lager.

Pilots who have asked for RAS on a gin clear day, routing through very busy class g airspace with everything else VFR, who, when given an avoiding action turn against pop up traffic 12 o'clock, 6 miles climbing hard towards them say "Uhhhhhh, sorry sir, confirm you wish me to turn hard uhhhh right onto a heading of what?" in a foreign accent!

Terminal controllers who remind me on gorgeous summer days that they have windows!! G*TS!!!

Still, all's fair in love and war

requests for higher that follow the following pattern...

a/c " is FL 330 our final level?"
atc " what's your requested level?"
a/c "we can take anything up to FL 370"
atc "FL350 and FL370 are available, which would you prefer"
a/c "either is good for us"

etc etc etc...infinfity

or... when you are obviously very busy on the r/t, and some dimwits decide to have a nice little natter on your frequency.... get your crochet and a nice cup of tea lads, i've got all day.

then again though...if i'm feeling that way out pretty much anything can rile me women!

In the nicest possible way then, and with all due respect.........

"xxx cleared FL100"
"xxx climbing FL100"

A minute or two later...

"xxx approaching FL100 for further"

followed very shortly, after a further climb by.....

"xxx approaching FL130 for further"

and then.....

"xxx approaching FL190 for further"

.....and so on, regardless of conflicting traffic, all the way up the climb and down the descent.

I don't believe ATCOs in general give stepped climbs and descents just for the fun of it and we can see, thanks to the wonder of Mode "C", exactly which FL you're approaching

Cool

When they check on and say "looking for higher" (flight plan already shows them requesting it) I tell them to look UP... Also when they tell me the altitude passing to let me know that they are getting close to level off, I quite often say concur <G>...

regards

Flying into SYD (OZ), when given the STAR you are quite often told to cruise and descend at min. speed, then you start the descent the clearance changes to resume normal speed, then after changing frequency you're asked to slow down again!

One Asian pilot is supposed to have said:

"What you want next ....roop de roop!"

ATC: "take up the hold at XYZ, FLXX"

What am I going to do, pick it up and take it somewhere else? How about just "hold at XYZ, FLXX"?

I could go on and on here........ but I'll keep it to just the one.

The pilots who, having been instructed to hold and issued with an EAT, read it back and then ask WHY they are being held. It is sorely tempting to say "Beacuse I'm in that kinda mood today."

WE DON'T ISSUE INSTRUCTIONS JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT!!!

Four three three - TOTALLY agree about the "FLIGHT LEVEL" words to be read back. There is only so much battering about the head I can give to first officers about this, but I am fighting a losing battle when half the Captains on the fleet think it's ok.

HOWEVER!...............

I think you will find that "we'll do our best" is dropped in when you leave us far too late on the profile to meet the descent FL restriction. We all have STAR plates which say "EXPECT ATC clearance to be level FL80 by PLACE"; but would you really rather we all started jumping in and saying "request descent"? when it's obvious you're busy?

Other wan*y things that I have heard pilots use:

"WE HAVE HIM ON TCAS" - bully for you. The ATCO can go off home now knowing that you'll separate yourself from everybody.

"HOTSHIP 123 WITH YOU" - what, are we holding hands now?

"THE Hotship...." - yes, THE one and only. Aren't we all priveleged to be in your company.

After being to told "Hotship 123 cleared to land rwy 23"
"LAND - Hotship 123"........like it is an instruction that will be met at all costs.

Before anyone posts back saying "oh get a life and stop getting wound up soo easily" it's you guys who make us all look like n*bs.

What about one from the other side. Always has me laughing when I check in somewhere :
"XX123 heading 240"
And the response I get " XX123 stay on the heading"

Like I'd just wonder off and do my own thing!

er82...to explain..

Your "XXX123 heading 240", could be construed as a bit vague.

Is 240 degrees the heading you just happen to be on? Or was it assigned as "radar" heading by the previous controller? Either could be true.

Therefore response you get is quite correct (Well, almost, I would have said continue on the heading, rather than "stay on", but it amounts to the same thing).

You also said
Like I'd just wonder off and do my own thing!
You might not, but it HAS been known. Hence the controllers requirement to CHECK that you really are on an assigned heading, and to make sure that you continue on it.

Hope this helps

My you folks are touchy aren't you. Once datalink comms come along for ATC intstructions I can get rid of the continual barrage of instructions coming into my ear which have nothing to with me and replace it with blissfull silence. A few days flying in the London TMA makes you realise that it can't come soon enough. Once that's sorted we won't have to talk to each other at all, a blessed relief for me and for a lot of you by the sound of it.

BEX,
My apologies, I probably didn't explain myself very well. I have before checked in on frequency and specified that we are on a radar heading, and still been met with the response of continue on the heading/stay on the ehading. Doesn't get on my nerves, just makes me chuckle (I try and find anything to laugh at on those long sectors of an hour!). And I can now understand why you have to say it, because I can imagine there are some out there who would just wander off course!
