I was travelling as SLF with Air Canada the other day and while I was emptying my bladder I couldn't help but notice that the toilets on this particular 767-200 were equipped with the same type of smoke detector that you might find in a local store. The round ones designed to be ceiling mounted in people's homes that you can buy in shops such as Woolworth's or B&Q (Canadian Tire or Home Hardware for any Canucks reading). One was simply hung from a hook on the wall in each toilet!
So I guess the technical question is - are these retail smoke detectors really as effective as the "factory fitted" models that might be installed in a newer aircraft?
And is it really safe to rely on these since any pax who fancied a quick smoke could surely just pop the battery out?
