As a PPL I would be very interested to do a visit to a significant ATC unit to see how things work (no offence to my local airfield, where I have visited!).
Can you tell me if it is possible to arrange a visit to, for example, Heathrow or Gatwick ATC, and if so, how do you go about it?

Try going on to the NATS website www.nats.co.uk
They run a fair bit of the ATC ops in the UK, in particular the London airports and London Terminal Control Area.
There should be some contact details on there. I couldn't tell you how to get in touch with non-NATS Towers (phonebook??)
I've seen it posted on here more than once that most towers will welcome a visit from a PPLr. Woudl be very good for you to see it from the other side of the mic.
I visited Stansted Tower as part of the recruitment process for NATS and found it to be very infromative. Well, it did some good as I start my training next year.
Hope this helps
