On September 11th Flight EK401 on the new DXB-PER route diverted to KUL and returned back to DXB rather than continue to PER which indicates a seriuos mechanical problem that required the aircraft to return to base.

I am interested in knowing if anyone has any info regarding the incident and what aircraft it was?

Understand it was the six-year old A6-EMI that suffered Trent engine failure resulting in diversion.

But don't tell anyone I told you ;)

A330-200,

I heard that from an Emirates "Fan" on the day of the alleged incident.

Kalium Chloride,

Thanks for the info, the RR Trent and in particular the Trent 892 which is the version used on the EK 777-200ER's has a bad record when compared to the GE90. Was the problem similar to that experienced by EK in the past three incidents?

Is there any way I could get to talk to this EK 'Fan'?

maybe you could get him/her to private msg me

thx

KC,

Perish the thought that I should be considered "pedantic", but A6-EMI was delivered on 25/7/97, which makes it just over 5 years old.

Newswatcher,

None of us would ever describe you as pedantic. Rather, extremely diligent and unbiased. I always enjoy your posts.

Short, sweet and to the point.

MTQatar / others...

how did EK handle the passenger situation? Transfer to other carriers or fly out an additional aircraft? I suppose that this being a 4 times weekly service would mean that it probably happened too on a day where there were no flights for the next 3 days.......sods law.

In the interests of being pedantic, surely a 4x weekly service doesn't _have_ to be a case of '4 on, 3 off'?

Surely you could have M-W-F-S services and flights every other day?

Trent 892 which is the version used on the EK 777-200ER's has a bad record when compared to the GE90.

It does? Don't forget there are a lot more Trents around than GE90s and the GE90 failures don't seem to make the press.
Having said that the '90 usually only spend a couple of weeks on wing before they're pulled for one reason or another :D

The Trent 892 does seem to have pretty bad IFSD rate, especially with airlines operate in warmer climate. In particular, Thai's Trent 892 on the B777-300 fleet has a IFSD above 0.04 per 1,000 EFHs. That is, it's more than twice the rate allowed for 180-minute ETOPS (0.02), or slightly below that of 120-minute ETOPS (0.05). Thai chose to suspend their ETOPS unilaterally.

MT, please give careful thought before identifying your source to A330-200. I would imagine that like most other folk, Emirates personnel have a non-disclosure clause in their contracts and you could get someone into serious trouble by revealing their identity.

I agree. Don't reveal your source MT. Obviously EK are keen to keep these things quiet like any other carrier would but these forums are all about inside info and rumours etc.
